ICONS

Arnott's Biscuits
Australia Crest

William Arnott was born in Scotland in 1827 and emigrated to Australia in 1850 with his brother David to join other family members.

Having trained as a pastrycook in Scotland, Arnott tried his luck on the goldfields but found he could earn more money by baking for the gold prospectors.

In 1853 he opened a bakery in West Maitland and after a number of setbacks, including flooding, he established a small shop in Newcastle in 1865.

The business expanded rapidly and helped by his wife, brothers and sons he opened the first Arnott's factory in Newcastle in 1877. In 1894 Arnott's Biscuits Ltd. bought a factory in Sydney.

The business remained in the family until 1970 when it became part of a large multinational. However, the quality of the Arnott's product is still of the highest note.

It has been estimated that Arnott's produces 75% of the biscuits eaten in Australia each year.

Managing Director is Mr. Chris Roberts.

DANGEROUS CREATURES

Red-Back Spider
Australia Crest

Latrodectus hasselti is found throughout Australia except in the hot deserts and coldest mountains. It is closely related to the Black Widow spider which is the most common source of spider bites overseas. The only venomous spider in New Zealand, the Katipo, is almost identical to the Red-back.

Red-Back SpiderThe female is about 3 times the size of the male and has a spherical satin-black abdomen about 1cm in diameter with a red/orange stripe. The stripe can be pink or even a light grey. The spider has eight long legs sprouting from the tiny front segment of the body.

The bite of the female can be dangerous to humans but no deaths have occurred since antivenene was introduced in 1956. Symptoms of being bitten are severe pain, sweating, particularly in the bite area, muscular weakness, nausea and vomiting.

The bite of the smaller male is considered harmless due to his small jaws being ineffective.

Red-Back

Mum spider is a real nasty, she eats dad after mating. After mating, and dinner, she spins up to 8 round balls of web for her eggs and some of these balls contain as many as 300 eggs. Weather permitting, the eggs will hatch in about 2 weeks time and the spiderlings will moult several times as they grow to full size.

The web is built in dry sheltered areas such as under rocks, in logs, junk-piles, sheds and dunnies. It consists of a funnel shaped retreat area with sticky threads running vertically to ground attachments.

Unlike the Funnelweb, the Red-back is not aggressive but will guard her eggs fiercely or will bite if trapped in clothing or rubbish being collected. Most bites are on the hand or foot of the victim.

There are no recorded cases of people being bitten you-know-where when sitting on a toilet seat.

DANGEROUS CREATURES

Funnel-Web Spider
Australia Crest

More than 300 people were bitten in 1998 by this dangerous spider which is prevalent in th North Shore of Sydney Harbour. Over 11,000 people have been treated with antivenom since it was introduced in the early 1980s. Since this time no-one has died from a funnel-web bite.

Funnel-Web Spider

Of the 30,000 species of spider in the world, 2,000 are found in Australia with the funnel-web being the most venomous spider in the world.

Venom from funnel-webs is supplied by the Australian Reptile Park, north of Sydney, to the Commonwealth Serum Laboratory to produce antivenom.

Stop press - a man from northern NSW died late March, '99, from a suspected funnel-web spider bite.

ARMY

ANZAC Day
Australia Crest

Military commemorative day on the 25th of April each year to celebrate the landing of the Australian and New Zealand forces at Gallipoli on that day in 1915.

Gallipoli
Gallipoli

The 1999 march honoured Herbert "Mick" Hollingsworth, one of the few surviving Australian combatants from World War 1. Mick was born in Aberdeen, NSW, and enlisted in the 12th Light Horse, seeing action at Beersheba and Damascus in 1917. Mick travelled behind NSW Governor Gordon Samuels and NSW RSL President Rusty Priest.

Paul Fischer, 101, who was awarded the Croix de Guerre and the Legion of Honour for his heroism in the trenches was unable to make the march, citing dicky legs.

ABORIGINAL

Burnum Burnum
Australia Crest

Aboriginal activist, actor, author and dreamer born a Woriworung and Yorta Yorta man at Wallaga Lake in southern NSW. He was christened Harry Penrith but took the name of his great grandfather, which means Great Warrior.

As a stolen child he spent his early years in children's homes.

When at the University of Tasmania in the late 60s, he led a movement to reclaim the remains of Truganini from the Tasmanian Museum for reburial.

He will be best remembered for planting the Aboriginal flag on the white cliffs of Dover on the Bicentenary Day of 26th January, 1988. This was his tongue-in-cheek way of claiming England, as Phillip had done to his homeland in 1788 when arriving with the First Fleet.

Prime Minister John Howard described Burnum Burnum as "a very gracious man and very strongly committed to the welfare of Aboriginal Australians".

Burnum Burnum died from heart disease on August 18th, 1997.

ABORIGINAL

Boomerang
Australia Crest

A curved flat wooden missile used by the Australian aborigine in hunting or warfare. There are also two types of boomerang, returning and non-returning.

The returning boomerang is used for catching birds. The aborigines would drape nets between a clump of trees and when a flock of birds flew overhead the natives would throw their boomerangs over the top of the birds. The boomerangs were thrown in such a way that they would hover over the birds, as a hawk would, and the birds would panic and swoop down into the nets. Hey presto, dinner! The aborigines also use this type of boomerang in the sport of throwing.

Boomerang

The non-returning boomerang was used in hunting but was mainly used in warfare as it could be thrown further and struck its target with greater force.

Nowadays the art of boomerang throwing has become an international sport but is not one of the sports in the Sydney Olympic Games in 2000.

ABORIGINAL

Didgeridoo
Australia Crest

Aboriginal wind instrument made from wood and about 4 feet long. The instrument is generally carved and painted.

Didgeridoo

The sound of a didgeridoo is deep toned and haunting and is played at corroborees.

Madonna arrived in Sydney in 1993 carrying a didgeridoo.

Paul Cowell from Northwich, England, arrived in Sydney on July 29th, 1999, carrying a didgeridoo. He had just returned from a 6 month hike around Oz. The didgeridoo is the most popular souvenir of the backpacking fraternity, sorry girls!

Listen to the music of Yothu Yindi for the sound of the didgeridoo. Perhaps Rolf Harris will do a remake of his wobble-board version of Stairway to Heaven, playing the didgeridoo?
