You won't make the money

"The sad thing is you won't even make the money."

I first heard this one after knocking out a player when a 4 on the turn gave him a set but completed my gutshot. Boy did it get under my skin, and became a self-fulfilled prophecy; I second-guessed every move I made, and donked out.

The second time I heard it I realized that it was a spiteful mind game, and while it still threw me a bit I was able to shake it off.

The third time I heard it I replied, "Neither will you," and went on with my game. If only all the mind games were that easy to spot and work around.

If something that someone says at the table distracts you or makes you not play the best poker you can, you really need to disable the chat all together and only focus on the task at hand - winning the tournament.

I am a big fan of trash talking in both live and online games. It is a very valid stratergy and has proven it's self many times over to me. I am able to simply ignore or in other words "let it roll of my back".. Basically, I say "Who the hell cares what joe blow from god knows where thinks". It is kinda like in school when someone made a "your momma" joke but had never met your mother. They don't know what they are talking about and are only saying it to get a rise out of you.

Most people when they are angry, including me self, do not make the best decisions. This translates into the poker world as being overly aggressive or not aggressive enough(trapping) when you really shouldn't be. Angry people tend to try and get the person who made them angry back by playing marginal hands too aggressively or by not playing their strong hand aggressively enough and thus making/saving the trash talker money. Resulting in a loss as a direct result of something that someone, who dosn't know you, has said.

If you are unable to ignore the comments I recommend that you disable the chat completely and if you are live listen to a head set(not too loud though).

ive never seen anyone tell anyone else or anyone tell me this......hmmm maybe im just playin the wrong people.....ne ways dont listen to comments like that and just play your game

Thanks, Tom, you make good points. If I remember right I did eventually ignore the first guy after a bit, but the damage was done.

One thing I forgot to say in the post was that this comment always comes from the rail after the player is knocked out. At that point, trash talking is no longer a game strategy, it's just being hateful. And I'll admit I've ragged on people for knocking me out once or twice out of spite. It is, or can be, an emotional game.

Lol yes, it's true. It's such a strange comment that it stuck out.

It sounds like you're playing the right people, actually. And yeah, I finally realized that the last people whose criticism you want to listen to are people you just knocked out of a tournament.

Listen any comments like this is a reflection not of your game but theirs. You getting lucky and getting your gut shot maybe made you lose your confidence as well. So what. To win, particularly a multi table situation, you are going to have to luck out. Dare I say suck out. Thats why I never get emotional when someone sucks out on me. Its going to happen. Just as some bitter dork has to release their frustration by saying something nonsensical like that.
I always say GG no matter what. Win or Lose. You take this tact with opponents and go on with your game. Winners win and losers lose. Be a winner.

Don't even give what people say to you a second thought. Who cares what they say at the table. They might call someone a donkey for playing bad cards, but maybe that donkey was being aggressive and trying to reraise steal the pot.

I agree with the others ignore and play your game. I have noticed this donkey calling and bad trash is usually a sore loser of a hand or knocked out. The real donk is that player, how many lucky hands or allin preflop calls they have committed and won. The shoe was on the other foot. Most of the time bad poker playing got them in trouble.

thanks for the follow up......and just to add this..........y not just say GG and leave if it bothers you......talkin trash to someone after you've been knocked out whether the person played bad or perfect is not going to get you back into the game........I just dont get it

I love trash talking and becuase I do it, I have to able to accept it when it is directed at me.....I keep notes on guys that trash talk at tables so I know not to bother with them at the tables, becuase they will be relentless with their comments at the table. You did mention that you have done some trash talking on your own when you have been knocked out of tournaments so maybe players remember that and when they play you they fire back......a comment like "you won't finish in the money" is pretty lame, my comment back would be very simple..."i may not but you definitely won't, GG and goodbye"...you will learn if you are able to dish it out a little the comments from other players will bother you less and less.....just my 2 cents....
