When I go to the tourney tab, I have no tabs underneath to select the private option.

Check two things... first being that you are clicked on Real Money.. and the other that you have the correct verson. Both Poker Stars and Full Tilt have .net and .com versons.. one of the being play chips only and the other is real money and play chips. Sorry I don't remember which is which though.
