If you like playing both tournies and cash games keep playing both. You aren't losing too much money, why give up on tournies when you have the potential to make up for all your losses if you place high in the money.
Personaly I hate cash games too many crazy people out there. For me to make it worth playing cash games I would have to play beyond my means which is never good to do. Dan |

Ok, looks like your ring game skills are working fairly well but your tournament games needs some work. As you are well aware tournament play is different that ring games and it appears that you have brought your ring game to the tournaments. What you need to do is stop and take a serious look at how you are playing in the tournaments. By any chance do you have Poker Tracker or any other software that allows you to review your play. If not I would suggest you invest a couple of dollars in some "good" software and use it to find out where you are making your mistakes in the tournaments. It is obvious that you have a fairly good grasp of the game but there is a major leak in your tournament play. Then again, in cash games when the cards start going bad and you start hitting "good" hands but come up second best you probably leave the game. Whereas in a tournament you are stuck. But you need to see where your losses are coming from in the tournaments and the only way you can do that is review your play.
Good Luck at the tables. |

How many tournaments did you play? If you only played 3 125 and 3 50+ tourney's its not that bad. In tournaments there is a lot of variance because you're only playing for first 3 places. If you make one nice score, you are up a nice amount. In my opinion if you wanna quit playing tournaments if you're only 8 buy-ins down you shoudn't have started playing them anyway.

First off, good job with the cash games and keep it up!
My suggestion would be to focus more on cash play, so you can still practice tourneys as well but the additional cash winnings will offset tourney losses while you improve. Is there any particular part of a tournament that you find is difficult? ~moo |

I think all tournament play is a little like playing a lottery ticket. While skill is important there's a lot more luck involved in getting into the money in a tournament. You're going to have to win multiple races.
Cash games are a more steady source of income. One hand isn't going to knock you out of the cash game. I also win in cash games and lose in tournaments. I've about given up on them now except the shooutout type that PS has. I can play Sng which is what those tournaments are. |

Just so everyone knows Im only talking about live play here! I think where my play suffers in tournament play is that when i get close to the money its always so broke that I can not even survive two rounds of blinds! I do know that it invl=olves two seperate type of play and I adjust for the two... I guess i just dont know where im missing out, however I have been getting better latley just seem to be taking bad beats from chip leaders and crippling my stack! maybe i should just learn to stay away from them eh?

That's the toughest part to survive during a tournament is approaching the bubble! Many small stacks that you're competing with tighten up but the chip leaders will all take opportunities when the odds are good to take out the little guys. It's hard to do, especially if the blinds are big and your stack is little, but if you aren't doing it already then just play premium hands and play position. Don't waste 1/4th of your stack calling the blinds with hands like J9 or little pocket pairs just to get pushed off the flop, or even before the flop but after your call. Get a couple big face cards and push when most of the competition folds around to a bully stack with a big preflop raise. This of course is all subjective and I've just found that it has worked well for me.
Best of luck. ~moo |
