Default Looking for a 2nd opinion

Blinds: 500-1,000
Position: BB
8-Handed (final 2 tables)
Player on the button is a new player, seems to have a fairly solid game. Accumulated a nice stack by winning key hands. He has about 35-40k.

Action folds around to the button. He throws in a 5000 chip. He didn't announce a raise so it counts as a call. Small blind folds knowing of his intent to raise, I look down to find A9o, and check my option.

Flop: 4c 8d 9h

I check, Button bets 5000, I push all in for my last 11,000. He calls and turns over JJ.

Was this a bad play, or just bad luck?

I feel a 9 high flop was the worst thing that could happen for me there. I was nursing a short stack, and didn't really think his large intended raise from the button represented too much strength. I felt he had a couple of high cards and wanted to take it down pre-flop, or he may have been bullying the 2 short stacks with his large one. If I missed the 9, I could've easily mucked this one and picked a better spot.

I don't think I go all in there. He bet 5 times the big blind post flop. I would have to think he has at least an over pair.

He attempted to raise to 5x preflop and failed to state raise. Then he bets 2x pot on the flop. I'm thinking a fold was the best option. Even if he doesn't have it, you said he was a strong player, but then you play against him like he's weak. Top pair (9) isn't that great of a place to push. I would of folded, and kept my chips.

By the way, why didn't you put any credit into a 5x bb raise from him? What does it take for you to consider him, a supposed strong player, on a big pocket pair? Why did you decide to check/push?

I interpreted it as a "please don't call me" raise trying to pick up the blinds. Good players steal too I just thought there was a pretty large range of possible hands considering no one else was in the hand. Has there been any limpers and he still made the raise, I could justify laying down as well.

the whole play was fishy, considering he wanted to bet 5x then just followed up again with 5000, top pair top kicker isnt a bad play to go all in with, especially since u were short stacked, i think you did alright to go all in if you felt like he was trying to steal

he tried to raise pre-flop (5xbb) and you checked it down you may have hit a good flop, pretty standardplay but none the less good play, you hit a pair not very strong seeing as 10's j's q's k's and aces have you beat. If you were intent on pushing your chips in why check, you show weakness. Yes he over bets the pot, a nice play to add to your armoury by the way (you obviously thought he was bluffing). In my opinion you should have bet between 1200 to 2000 chips. If he re-raises give him credit for a better hand remember he wanted to raise preflop. I think pushing all in was a bad play but hey, different strokes for different folks.

I think you missed betting the flop. If you bet pot and he comes over the top, you can be pretty sure you are beat.

I don't go all in there, if he dosen't attempt to raise that much pre-flop then maybe I go all in. But since he did attempt it, I would have probly just called the bet. I don't think you played it horribly, you did what a lot of people would do.

I don't like your push when he bets 5,000 into the pot because his pot odds are right even if he does only have to over cards (only calling 6,000 into an 18,000 chip pot 3 to 1 where 6 outs with two cards to come is close to 25%) Plus I will make this type of bet (betting about half his stack) against a short stack if I have a strong hand trying to entice a push.
