Default starting hands

For myself my starting hand is always determined by position. If I am first to call I will only call with a very strong hand(i.e. pocket 10's or higher or AK), because you don't know what everyone else is going to do. You have to be prepared to call a raise or even an all-in if you hand is exceptionally strong. In later position you can get away with more hands, provided that no one has raised or gone all-in. All of this is also determined by the people at the table, if it's a low limit table or a freeroll then people will call with just about anything before the flop hoping to hit something.
