Default Tom McEvoy Questions and Answers

Good Day everyone. As you know we have our very own Poker Pro on Railbirds. Please welcome Tom McEvoy. Mr. McEvoy has agreed to have a Forum thread that will run constantly for your Poker Questions. Please remember to be polite. We wont tolerate any name calling or cussing in this thread. He will answer them as they come into the thread so please try not to duplicate the question. Again I would like to thank Mr. McEvoy for agreeing to be our resident Pro and doing this thread.

How old were you when you first got the poker "bug" and when did you realize that it was possible to make a living doing it?

BTW...Thanks for doing this Tom....you the Man!

What is your opinion of all the young elite MTT players that have been making splashes on the real felt as well?

Scott Freeman, Annette oberstad, the list could go on and on and on but kids like this that OWN online MTTs, are they on another level than the live pros?

Default Mr Mcevoy

I was wondering what limits should you play on with only 700 bucks?

Hi,
First off thank you for being part of the railbirds poker community! My question is: What do you think about playing against female poker players? Are there any female up and comers we should watch out for and why?

I would first like to say thank you, Tom. I think this will be a huge asset to all the members of the community.

We all go through tough and trying times whem nothing seems to be working. You're getting drawn out on, you're not getting cards, nothing is hitting when you do finally get something to work with, etc. How do you personally handle those spells and what advice could you give to others to help them work through those times, excluding a break?

Thank you for your time.

Cool

I have many well know poker books including your "Beat Texas Holdem" what I find most interesting is the rationale, in your book written in narrative by Shane Smith, that speaks to the thinking that goes in to why you do what. I am no math expert but the math seems to me the math is the quickest part of the decision.

It seems that many players reduce the rationale of a hand down to the outcome I.E. I had ## he called me with #!!.

Q1.) I'd like to hear your professional view on the basis for calling or betting a hand beyond hand strength.

Q2.) What is the necessary preparation and necessary qualities to be a pro?

Default Making a read

Recently i have been trying to become a better reader of my oppenents. I have been ok at reading my oppenents in the past but what are the main things you look for while reading your oppenent in a live tournament and/or cash game?

Thank you very much.

Mr. McEvoy, First off, let me start by saying it is an honor to have you on our poker community. My question is, In comparison to the year where you won your main event ('83), what would you say is the main difference in the game between now and then? I'm not talking about the field sizes that got a thousand times bigger, but mainly about the way people play their game
