Thumbs up

Quiz master, I have to say I am very impressed with the motivation/answer. IMHO, that was the best motivation I have seen to date. I got the answer correct but really only because I had it memorized that it was 22:1 chance that you are against aces. Very nice quiz today!.

There are 1326 two cards combinations that can be made from a 52 card deck and there are 6 combinations for each pocket pair. 1326/6 = 221 so your odds of being dealt pocket aces, or any other pocket pair, are 220 to 1. Your pocket Aces will win about 80% of the time when you are heads up with just one player but will only win about 30-35% against ten players. Think I read that somewhere.

why are the odds higher that someone has AA when you have KK, than if you had any two random cards. I would think the odds of someone having AA would be the same reguardless of what two cards you're holding

I got it right and I hate math and it really just sucks. But as I was answering this quiz playing in a sng I had kings i raised got called then raised by another i reraised to a low stack allin to a same size stack allin so i called it to face a pair of queens and a pair of aces. It happens more than you realize two days earlier i wasnt in the hand but aa vkk vqq with a flop of kqt the aces held up with a straight.

You stole my answer! It also follows that if I have QQ he has KK, and so on down the line. I'd bet money on it (already have, sigh...).

Wow, here's something WHO CARES?

I understand the math and you always want to put people on a hand, but if you're sitting there with K/K and someone has A/A that's just a cooler and you hope for the best. Worrying about the E=mc2 BS is just a waste of time. You know the number is small, but now you're trying to figure the odds that your two outer will hit.

The point is that there is a SMALL chance that when you have KK, someone else has AA...as someone one else pointed out, about 1 in every 22 times you have KK, you'll be up against AA. So in practical terms, you never worry about it...you reraise right back with your cowboys. You will lose on occasion, and lose spectacularly at times, but you would be giving up far too much to ever lay the kings down pre-flop. That reraise could come from a lot of other hands that you are way ahead of.

The only time I would ever lay down kings pre-flop would be if we were on the bubble of a satellite that paid the same to everyone (like entry in another tournament, say), and I had plenty of chips to where I didn't need to play at all to make the prize.

In ANY other case, I would be thrilled to see action from a single opponent with the kings.

Now if it's several people raising and reraising, or the raising started after the flop and there was an ace on the board, that would be something else. But pre-flop against one player, my chips will go to the middle.
