Hmmm...
Two fold answers, one correct, one not? This was funny and sad all at the same time. I think you have at best a calling hand here...a pair of aces without any other help is really a pretty weak starting hand for Omaha Hi. Experienced hold'em players who don't play a lot of Omaha see the aces and start thinking that the hand is better than it is... In Omaha, you really want all 4 cards to work together some how. A really great starting hand in Omaha would be, for instance, Ah, Ad, Jh, Td. You have the pair of aces, both are suited giving you two nut flush possibilities, and the JT combine to give you lots of good quality straight possibilities as well. You have a LOT of ways to make a strong hand. Here, you only have the aces and the limited nut straight potential that the 8 & 5 combine for. Bottom line, you really have to flop well or you're done with this hand. In reality, I might call or I might fold, depending on how the other players at the table are playing. If it's a really aggressive table, with lots of raising and reraising before the flop, I'll throw this hand away...it just doesn't have enough potential. If the table is a little calmer, and I have a reasonable chance to see the flop if I limp (or maybe have to call just a single raise), I'd be more inclined to play. Pocket pairs don't really do all that well in Omaha...if you don't hit your set or quads you are frequently behind. Straights, flushes, and full houses are pretty common, so you want to play hands that give you the potential to make them. |
