A colleague of my mine ponied up the 10K to play in the WSOP Main Event in 2007. He played well and made it to Day 3 with about 100k in chips. Early into day 3, he was just a few spots from getting into the money, and had enough chips to do so with ease, but got pocket Aces.
He went all-in and got called by a bigger stack who had KQ suited (hearts). The flop can out with one heart and no pairing, however the next two cards were.... yep, 2 hearts and he got knocked out. |

i got to agree lol with 10k on the line im not just pushing hard....if someone put me in i would probably find it hard to let it go and im sure i would be in with the aces.....but if you are sayin he was just pushing that hard preflop all in on the spot he shouldnt have........and if he makes a small raise or somethin or just calls a raise then pushes on the flop with the guy making no pair he just lets it go on the flop and your friend makes some profit.......but hey aces are aces
good for winning small pots or losing huge ones as they say |

Just imagine if he put in a normal raise, 3X the BB, and gets called by KQh. After the flop he puts in a pot size raise would KQh call? Probably not. Containing the pot is the key here. If your goal is to get into the money. If final table was his goal he did the right thing.
Depends on what kind of BR your friend has. If 10K is all of it I say dont even look. Toss em and get in the money first. This is a form of discipline that must be integrated into every one game. When situations like this arise-YOU MUST TAKE YOUR TIME. Thats why Pros seem to take an inordanant time on an easy call. They are taking EVERYTHING into consideration. If you can get a recording of 2007 Main Event you can see how Scotty Nguyen who had a massive amount of chips from just before final table just lose his chips. With his stack he could have gone out for a cup of coffee and read the paper and come back he would have made final table. He criticizes himself after that in a brutal moment for Scotty. He seems to have learned that lesson after getting so far in the 50K HORSE this year. I hope your friend can use this lesson in future endeavors. |
