Heads-up flop decision #2
2008-08-06

You're playing a fairly good opponent in an heads-up sit & go. Halfway through the first level, you get KDiamonds 5Clubs. Your opponent raises pot to 60 - as usual - and you call.

The flop is QDiamonds TDiamonds 9Diamonds. You check and your opponent bets 80, a bet which you promptly raise to 360 - pot.

Oops - your opponent, with a slightly larger stack than yours, comes over the top with a raise to 1,200 total! It'll cost you 840 to call and you have 1,020 left in your stack, so basically, you're choosing between folding and going all-in.

Well?

Fold
This might look contra-intuitivt, but this is an easy all-in decision. Apart from when you face made flushes, you have good odds for shoving. You're paying 1,020 to win 1,860, so you'll only need to win about 35 % of the time to break even.

The best your opponent could have - again with the exception of flushes, but you could still outdraw those with a bit of luck - is QQ or a flopped straight. You almost have odds against both of these hands. You're actually a favourite against hands like Qx, despite not currently being in the lead. Besides, your opponent could be bluffing. Granted, the chances of that aren't huge, but they do exist.
