I don't get it. What is the purpose of a team? Are their like rankings or something, i'm confused?

There is no "purpose" Undercover, other than to have some fun!

A few of us got together and thought it would be fun to form some small groups to play in private tourneys.

Each team is comprised of 4 members ONLY, each member representing one of the suits, for example the "Burntaces" have 4 members: Ad, Ah, As, Ac

There are no leaders or co-leaders. Each team is independent of all other teams and is responsible for setting their own guidelines and rules.

THE BOTTOM LINE IS THIS: WE WANTED TO BE ABLE TO PLAY IN SOME SMALLER TOURNEYS WITH SMALL GROUPS OF FRIENDS! THE TEAM BASED ON A SET OF CARDS WAS JUST A COOL WAY TO DESIGNATE THE 4 MEMBERS OF EACH TEAM. THERE ARE NO RANKINGS, WE ARE NOT CLANS BECAUSE OUR MAXIMUM NUMBER OF MEMBERS IS LIMTED TO 4 ONLY FOR EACH TIEAM! IT IS ALSO BY INVITATION, USUALLY FROM A FRIEND WHO MAY BE STARTING THEIR OWN TEAM!
