Saying, "Check it Down"

Sep 5, 2007 6:47 am Report Abuse

I just wanted to pose the question out of curiosity...

We all know when in a tournament, and a short stack is all in, there is an "implicit collusion" to check down between two or more players in order to try and eliminate the short stack. Sort of an unspoken word in order to eliminate another player to get to the money. And to be honest, I think it is good practice and should be done...

However! I thought that you could NOT actually say it out loud. Like type in the chat box or talk across the table and say, "Hey, check it down." I thought by saying it aloud it's considered collusion.

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Saying ANYTHING about a hand in progress is against the rule.

That said, it is definalty something that I try to practice in hopes of getting that short stack out just like you said, but saying it during a hand is definatly not something you want to do.

It's one of those ettiqute <spelling> things in my opinion.

Thanks astrogini!

That's what I thought... I mentioned it and I thought someone said that it was ok which is why I posted it here. smile

I think it is not proper to say it. A few weeks ago at the casino a guy was all in and one guy said let's check it down and the other said ok.. On the river the guy that first said it said, I was bluffing and made a big raise. He had hit the river. The other two were mad as heck and I thought that I was going to see my first poker fight.

saying it can be considered collusion

and its not always the best thing to check it down, depends on the situation

GoldenElite Sep 5, 2007 7:16 am

I agree with astrogini 100%.

The only situation where I wouldn't be checking it down is in a situation where I have a monster and feel confident the shortstack can't beat me.

Waterpilot Sep 5, 2007 7:29 am

LOL I bet ButtonDog. I would have been angry too. Haha

Like I said, I'm all for doing it (It's always situational) but talking about it doesn't seem right. Making mistakes are part of the game for whomever it benefits. Short stack or not, but the ability to talk about it seems like it takes that away...

It is wise to check it down unless you have the nuts ,you want to eliminate the guy so if you don't have the nuts then check and hope 1 of you eliminates him , I don't say it out loud since talking in a hand is something I don't do and I think it should be obvious you check if you don't have the nuts ....on the other hand I have seen people raise with crap make the other guy fold and then the allin guy wins and stays in when the guy who folded could of knocked him out lmao , that's clueless you want as many people out as possible to move up lol

most sites have a problem with this, live it comes down to the individual tournament rules but online you are not allowed to say anything that might unfairly advantage or disadvantage a player in a hand

this being said I quite often have used the term when i am involved in the hand

can you guys say check

i havent discussed the hand ,but have asked a simple question, then again im kinda sneaky and use it to induce betting when i have the nuts

youll have to ask a moderator on each of the sites what is acceptable and what isnt

coach421 Sep 5, 2007 7:48 am
sherx; i have seen it alot also.Just the other day I floped a full house and was going to check it down and some ?ss went all in so i called and he got mad. I told him i was going to check it down and he said yea right. I said see ya.lol
Waterpilot Sep 5, 2007 7:51 am

More great insight! Thanks Wall and SherX!

Although it may seem like it, I'm not crying about it at all. I don't know that I'd ever complain about that in particular, it was more about clairification then anything. Just want to ensure my etiquette is in check and don't want to call it collusion if it isn't...

talking during a hand is most definely ok on all poker sites

if you read there rules most are specific about what is ok and what is not

but here is the thing talk both live and online is a valuable tool for getting tells on players hand strength

what is against most sites rules is someone talking while others are in a hand, as you are not involved in the current hand you have no right to comment on it

the except is when you are in a hand with 2 or more other poeple and your comments affect the decisions of someone with regards there actions involving someone else

a prime example is call him he always bluffs

or you have pot odds there you have to call

be careful guys with what you say the most harmless thing can get you banned or chat banned if reported, including the threat i am going to report you if it is found to be a false accusation

i have been reported twice for talking during a hand and both times support has reviewed the chat and stated "nothing said was outside of the rules of this site, please read our tournament rules carefully if you have any queries"

but i have reported a person who was not only banned for his language and affecting the play of the poeple on the table but was removed from the game on the spot

i have also seen someone removed mid hand on full tilt for racist remarks the chips in the pot were instantly won by the other person in the hand

In a tourney "checking it down is usually a good strategy unless you have the nuts. In a ring game not necessarily a good practice. Saying it is usually not allowed and not good practice since it may get you in trouble even if not against the rules. We had a good blog on this last night...b0w

ewww, don't say it out loud! you're inviting other players to cheat with you.

also, aside from agreeing not to cheat, i don't have any agreements with the other players at the table. when i'm in a hand, i try to make all my decisions based on what I believe is the most profitable outcome for me. i'll usually "check it down," but only because that usually gives me the best chance of making the most money.

take care, and good luck out there.

  • Players and observers may not discuss a hand until the action is complete. Discussing cards discarded or hand possibilities is not allowed.
  • i took this straight off of fulltilt site rules

as you can see it is kinda vague and is open to interpretation

    THERE'S

be careful but the crux is you may not discuss your hand or what you think your opponent may hold if any other person is involved

but depending on the moderater at that moment they can literally take it as you may not speak at all

Again... Thanks all for the fantastic responses!
    SherX Sep 5, 2007 8:33 am
Well that's the kind of fool I'm talking about good lmao , job on cleaning him out lol
    Poprocks Sep 5, 2007 8:35 am
Yeah. I totally think that it is rude when ppl say anthing in that regard. Sad though ppl still do it.
    watchdog26 Sep 5, 2007 9:03 am

Well here is what I know and what I have seen. I have watched many final tables on t.v. where 3 people were in the pot and one of the two who weren't all in have asked the other do you just want to check it down or what? and noone said a thing or cried foul.

The guy all in is all in no matter what, so I don't really see how this gives the other two an unfair advantage when they decide to check it down.

They aren't talking about their hands, they don't say what they have or don't have, they are just agreeing not to bet.

    Nonickname Sep 5, 2007 9:11 am

Personally, I hate this unwritten rule, because many people don't follow the rules. While playing in a home game last week, 2 people said they wanted to check it down, then turned their cards over before the flop. To me, that seemed like collusion, because if the cards weren't turned over for everybody to see, then one of these 2 could have changed their mind and made a bet. Human nature being what it is; most people can't resist betting the nuts, especially when the other person in the hand has double your stack.

Yesterday, I played online and didn't bet the top 2 pair because a guy was all in. The other guy in with me hit a gut ball straight on the river. There was no checking down once he hit his straight. Stupid me for believing that everybody knows this rule and follows this rule.

    Wiggy Sep 5, 2007 9:23 am
truthfully betting into a small side pot in my mind is a better practice, as long as you dont scare off the third party you have the chance at the very least of collecting that pot which could very easily amount to the same amount you had to call from the short stack in the first place, may not be a friendly practice as a lot of people will fold to a 2-3x blind raise i think getting that chance at either an extra chunk of chips or taking down a bigger pot when you know you've gotta a quality hand is better then just trying to eliminate one person out of the game, you never know you might knock out 2 at once which is even better right?
