Would you make the call?

Aug 3, 2007 11:16 pm Report Abuse

So yesterday in the RB freeroll and I finished in 69th place. I cashed, but the hand that took me out is bothering me a little bit. Only because I'm not sure if I made the right decision or not... This way, I will know what to do next time...

Here's the situation (as close as I can remember):

Just got moved to a new table and was dealt AK off UTG. I had about 18,000 in chips and the blinds were 2,000. I raised 3 times the blind to 6,000, next guy folds and the next guy who has about 22,000 in chips goes all in. Everyone else folds. So it's back to me. There is about 30,000 in the pot, and all I have left is 12,000 so I would be all in. Should I call or fold? I'm already in the money but folding would leave me with only 6 big blinds... Of course I'd still be in it.

What would you do?

Prob would have gone all in first. There would also be the ante on top of the blinds, so as a short stack i would push all in and hope for the blinds and not be to bothered if i was called. A K is a very good hand, especially short stacked.

AK is a good hand, but I would have folded...You go to the flop looking for an A, K, or straight possibility. At that point, you cut your losses and look to make it up later. What did he have, or did he hit anything, or what was the outcome of the hand (assuming you lost).

got to have have chips to win the thing ,so folding wouldnt have been the worst thing

I agree with Coughlin, I would have pushed all in to begin with considering you had less than 10 times the big blind. Since you raised though, I would have called his all in bet because you either had him dominated if he was holding something like AQ, or you may have been in a race situation if he held a middle pair. Don't think about finishing further in the money, play for 1st.

you raised 1/3 or your stack....Time to push. If I raise 1/3 of my stack preflop, you can guarantee I will be all in on the flop 95% of the time.

GL on the felt

You're right Coughlin I forgot about the antes... Didn't even think about going all in... Now it looks like I should have... Thanks!

Thanks for all the comments so far!!!

What happened:

I called. He had KK. A king came on the flop and he made a set. Turn was an Ace the I have no idea what the river was... Haha I just know it wasn't an ace so I lost.

Never, ever, ever fold AKo with 9 big blinds in a tournament. It's a very easy call, folding would be really terrible but your best move would just be to go all in the first time as you are short stacked.
westy Aug 3, 2007 11:31 pm
If you are going to play a hand out of position at that point of a tournament you have to be committed enough to go all in with it because chances are you will be forced ......so realisticly you have to make your desicion to do so before you enter the pot.......let us know what happened..........cheers
guazza Aug 3, 2007 11:31 pm
No way. surely CALL!!!
mlkmn Aug 3, 2007 11:31 pm
since your short stacked i'd went all in. you may not have got a better hand and this would be a good shot to double up. u fold, you may get crappy hands and be forced to go all in with a bad hand
DKDLUX Aug 3, 2007 11:34 pm
u have no choice u have to call.
Waterpilot Aug 3, 2007 11:34 pm
Thanks again for all the comments. I'm feeling a little better now. I don't mind losing (as much) if I made the right call...
DKDLUX Aug 3, 2007 11:35 pm
you have about 50% chance to see ak or k by the river

Man I'm glad I did this... I never would have thought, at the time, about going all in. This gave me some new to think about... Thanks again everyone!

Dalton61 Aug 3, 2007 11:44 pm

you were getting almost 3:1 pot odds w/ AK.. i'd call that all day long suks that u lost, but i would have done same. folding= being left w/ a VERY short stact & REALLY wondering if u should have called.. gl, Dalton
