PokerStars? No thanks....

Jul 17, 2007 10:38 pm Report Abuse

This is more of a rant really… So I played in the RB freeroll this morning at PokerStars. Ugh, I played terribly. This was my second time ever playing on PokerStars and was trying to get used to how things work… But here is my problem, my table was full but at least 5 players were sitting out. If the other two weren’t sitting out then they weren’t playing their hands (Not that they should be playing junk though). So it was basically two handed, me and another guy. Anyway, it felt like we were playing heads up really… First hand I folded, second hand I was dealt pocket 5's, and he was dealt pocket 8's, lost. 3rd hand I ended up folding. 4th hand won with AQ. 5th hand was dealt pocket 8's and he was dealt pocket 10's, lost. 6th hand was dealt and I folded. 7th had I had AJ, he had an 8 2 and won with trip twos. So now I’m short stacked.... 8th hand was dealt AK and went all in. He was dealt pocket 9’s and won. So in 8 hands a total of 5 pocket pairs were dealt out between two players! Who knows what the others were dealt… Now if the table was full, I might be able to see it… But there were really only 2 of us playing! What are the odds of two players getting dealt pocket pairs 5 times (between the two of us) in 8 hands? Especially when we were the only two playing? Just doesn’t seem right to me… Say what you want about Full Tilt but I have never seen that before on there… Not so many so soon. I’m not crying about my play or the other player btw. Just that I thought that the cards dealt were a little weird. Comment as you wish!

Wow, that is kind of odd. I am not a big fan of the Poker Stars site. I much prefer Full Tilt.

The sitting out the whole first half of the tournament irriates me! I have played a few RB Freerolls so far and at least half of the players at the table are sitting out. I think it should only be allowed for a maximum of 3-5 minutes. And only once.

My brother plays pokerstars all the time...me i like fulltilt. I guess its the set up of the table and the cards seem better dealt.
Waterpilot Jul 17, 2007 10:56 pm
I'm with you Jude! But then again that's prolly not too suprising... Haha
Waterpilot Jul 17, 2007 10:57 pm
I agree with you Andy! It could be that I'm just more comfortable at Full Tilt too...

The 'sitting out' thing bothers me too, but there's really nothing you can do unless everybody comes to a 'gentleman's agreement' to find a way to blind them out as fast as possible without fighting between the 2-3 players at the table...

One thing I like better about Full Tilt is how I can put my cursor over my avatar and see what my cards were that I folded.... which is helpful as I am usually playing late at night and can't remember what I had.....haha!

I thought Full Tilt hands were a bit far fetched compared to "real poker" games (at home, etc)... but then once I played at Poker Stars I couldn't believe some of the games. Every hand was a flush, full house, straight, etc. I swear, EVERYTIME I have gotten a flush on the flop WITH the ACE in my pocket, I get beat by a full house. Also seems like the players NEVER fold. It's bizarre. confused

Well sure, it's rare that it would happen that way. But over time it won't. I've seen less volatile results on Full Tilt that either UB or PS (the only other sites I've played on).

As far as the sitting out thing goes ... hey, if everybody in the tournament sat out but you, would you be upset? Probably not. It's just players registering and then either forgetting or choosing not to play once it starts. Be happy, you're the one that will end up cashing more often than you should (speaking entirely of the fact that half the field chooses to sit out and nothing to do with your play) because of all the dead money.

>>

yeah your right ppl sit out till blinds get bigger. no point playing from the start i think cos u always get a couple of ppl going all in every hand.

i have noticed that things like that happen quite a lot. the board will pair complete a st8...

>>

sometimes ppl are dealt the same hands...

u know what i think i might be – random not at all, casinos have predicted odds roulette yeah. So is ours predicted odds? They say it isn’t and frankly I believe them when the tell us it isn’t. but we have the same dealer as cash games ya, when say 2 ppl both get deal KK for example the pot will get pumped and the rake is usually the only winner. I saw it all the time that’s y i don’t play cash any more online, just tornys and feeders.

>>

I think the reason for this is we just c so many more hands online than live cos is faster.

first i only played at jokerstars(riverstars lol) and didnt knew about full tilt, now i play for 2 or 3 weeks on fulltilt and its way better then pokerstars... even my dad saw it in 1 time that full tilt is way better (now thats a real miracle lol)
Waterpilot Jul 17, 2007 11:13 pm
I agree ESD. This was at the very beginning or the tournament and with two players, it would seem that pocket anything would be good hands though. Which we were both getting. Hard to check down in those situations. Plus we both wanted to play, it's not much fun to check down. This wasn't really about the players sitting out but since we're on the subject.... That drives me bananas too. Makes things go soooooo slowly and takes so much longer...
JadedJude Jul 17, 2007 11:15 pm

"As far as the sitting out thing goes ... hey, if everybody in the tournament sat out but you, would you be upset?"

Well, that wouldn't be any fun wink I actually would much rather everyone play, I like playing at a full table.. just more fun for me.

"I think the reason for this is we just c so many more hands online than live cos is faster. "

That could be it Alli... I do see A LOT of hands ..haha

Waterpilot Jul 17, 2007 11:26 pm

Haha I agree Blaze!

And that is prolly true Alli!

Look!

The railbird events draw from the same population for the freerolls for FT and PS. Unless you back the proposition that the "sit-outter" only play PS, the only difference is you don't notice it so readily on FT because it doesn't say "sitting out"!

Don't get me wrong I love FT. It's my favorite site. I only play on PS for RB events. But this FT is better because not as many people sit out is nuts!

At some point some people learned that it was possible to eek out a small cash by simply signing up. Yes it is nuts and not in the spirit of poker nor Railbirds.

The only difference between the two sites is the "themes". Well that and the way they implement their random card generator. On PS the hand is preset once delt. On FT each card after the flop comes out of a random shuffle of the remaining cards. Both have the same chance of hitting impossible outs, PS leaves it self open for someone to figure out how to see the deck. FT leaves it self open to someone figuring out how to "time" their actions to create an edge.

That is the only difference between the sites.

But I still don't like PS!wink

JadedJude Jul 17, 2007 11:41 pm

Oh, I didn't mean that they sit out ONLY on PS, they do it for the RB tournaments on FT too. It irritates me on BOTH sites tongue

Waterpilot Jul 17, 2007 11:41 pm

Great comments DeadMoney! I wasn't really crying about the peeps sitting out though. More about ALL of the pocket pairs that were dealt...

I would like to know more about the shuffling v. preset though. I didn't know that...

Verniece68 Jul 17, 2007 11:46 pm
Wow, it does seem really weird to be dealt so many pockets between the two of you.....confused
JadedJude Jul 17, 2007 11:54 pm
That would freak me out in a real money game.(all of the pairs like that)...well, if it was MY real money not just a freeroll biggrin
Waterpilot Jul 18, 2007 12:04 am
Yeah, if it was over a period of time vs. the first 8 hands played I'd prolly not have thought about it but man...
MMagicM Jul 18, 2007 12:19 am
I went from stars to ft and back to stars. I like both sites, but actually perform a lot better on stars - in the rb freerolls and in real money tourneys as well. Weird...

And sit-outs are a bit annoying, but just take advantage of the situation. Let them sit and steal their blinds and after a bit more than an hour they are gone anyway!
Waterpilot Jul 18, 2007 12:22 am

I agree with you on the sit outs Magic!

Maybe it was just one of the days for me on PS. I haven't played on it much and it was just a little wierd to me...
