They have to follow the link in the referral email.

et me explain something about the referral system:

* When a railbird sends a "Tell a Friend" mail, a link is included in that mail that is tagged to the railbird that sent the mail. For that to happen, the railbird of course has to be logged in.

* When the reciever of the email visits railbirds.com to sign up, it has to be by clicking on the link that is included in the mail

* When the reciever has followed the link to railbirds.com we keep track of their referral in a session variable, that lasts during that visit. If they are returning to railbirds.com later then the referrer will not get the reward.

There is really no magic we can do here to fetch all the scenarios for how a user can register

maybe you can have a "referred by:" textbox available as part of the registration form.
