More than $64,000 seized in Greenville gambling bust

Nearly $64,000 sitting in an evidence room on Wednesday was seized from what Greenville County sheriff’s deputies described as a “gambling business” and could be used to pay for new training and equipment.Quantcast

The amount is on “the higher end” of what would normally be seized in a single operation, with more than $41,000 coming from an Anderson man identified as the business owner, deputies said.

The money must remain in evidence until the case is heard by a judge, who could order that it be turned over to the Sheriff’s Office, Deputy Matthew Armstrong said. Seized funds can’t be used on recurring expenses, such as salaries.

Twenty-seven people were ticketed on charges of unlawful betting after citizen’s tip led deputies to 90 Lenhardt Road in Greenville late Jan. 14, a deputy wrote in an incident report.

“This was not considered a friendly game of poker because investigators obtained information that there would be a high-dollar buy-in,” Deputy Matthew Armstrong said. “And this is not common with friendly games.”

Inside, deputies found a “buy-in” list, poker chips, gambling tables and five video gaming machines, a deputy wrote in an incident report. Investigators were on the scene for five hours, Armstrong said.

Those charged were summoned to appear in court on Feb. 17, according to tickets.

This is total bs. I had a couple friends caught up in this. The only reason the cops busted this was because they wanted to steal the money. They are going to used the confiscated money for there own use. The cops took every bit of money the people had, even what was in there wallets.

WTF...private home game???? friendly game...when has any game of poker been friendly????? and then proceeds can be used to pay salaries of the law enforcement establishment.. how ironic that gambling will pay the salaries of the constabulary!!!!! What a shambles!!!
PapaPower Jan 22, 2010 11:11 pm
$64,000?????

That's a LOT of cash for a 'home' game, don't you think?

That'd be a ton of money for any home game I'd be involved with, but for professional athletes' home games, that would be peanuts. It's all relative.

The real question for me is whether this was a profit-making enterprise for the host. Nothing in the article tells us if there was a rake.

Yes they will find out who the snitch is provided that the snitch gave a name. They cannot go into a private residence without reasonable cause and in order to get the search warrent they had to have the snitch's name to give to the judge. Personally the owner was an idiot though. The way he had that set up was stupid. Machines in the house? A buy in list? He should have had a floor safe with a secret door to it to put all the money in just in case he got busted. With no money in site the cops would have had a hard time proving any gambling was taking place. Just a friendly game of poker is all it would be. LOL

they needed to invite a cop, well a different one each week till they had a heap on the register and video and photos to prove they were there and the game would have gone on.....simple idea really works at our home game lol.
