DONKEY PLAY OR NOT

Nov 19, 2008 11:02 am Report Abuse

i was playing in a$1 tourny on ps last night and was told what a donkey i am and i coldnt play poker to save my life.

THE HAND

early in the tourny (about 20 mins) i am dealt Railbirds card: 4dRailbirds card: 5d in mid position and was going to fold but on the table we had 1 guy with 3 gold stars pinned to his chest who was raising any Ax he got and 2 seats after him a seriel pre flop raiser.my stack was up to 2100 thanks to a set of kings so i called the pre flop raisers 150 and so did mr gold star......flop comesRailbirds card: 3dRailbirds card: 5cRailbirds card: 6s nice flop me thinks mr preflop bets 150 i call and so does mr gold star,,,turn comesRailbirds card: Kd nice turn maybe flush draw and open ended straight draw,,,,,river comes Railbirds card: 7c and i make my straight.

mr pre flop bets 300 so i raise to 500gold star folds and so does pre flop.

i show my cards not to show off but because i wanted them to see them and they were not happy to be beaten by 45d.

you didnt have to be a pro to see what was happening on the table and i just got a bit sick of folding and took a cheap chance that paid off.

the end you think ,,,nope,,

as the game goes on i see these people callers turning cards like j7,q2,96 and playing 22 like it was kk.

anyway they went out before me and i made it to the money before i went out with kings over 9s to quad kings.

playing a winning with the 45 sort of made them think when i did bet any hand .

donkey play or not.

Suited connectors are some of your better cards preflop. I would have played them. Congrats on the money too.

A little risky pre-flop only getting 1:1 on a 5xBB bet. You called not knowing you were going to get 2:1, which is still risky. But the flop gave you something and you were getting 4:1, then 5:1 on a 3+:1 draw, so you were pretty much priced in. I'm going to give you 3+:1 because I'm assuming that a set of 5s would have taken the hand too. From the information you gave, it just sounds right.

If my math is off, I apologize. But it seems like a good play to me. You used your reads to make a play and it paid off. People can bray about you being a donk all they want. You played your opponents and that's what poker's all about. IMO

4/5 suited is still weak in mid position, u wanna be on the button or in late. drawing hands like those are good when u get pots odds. i believe barely got 2 to 1? i woulda folded.

4 5 suited , not bad because you had a read on two loose players. Congrats

The best way to avoid comments on play is to simply not show your cards. If showing is up to me, I don't show.

Loved the way you played them....You sized up the table and played your hand. As a player who has been called a donkey, more times than not, you have to play the hand dealt; how you play it is no one else's business. Good on you and gl
