How's this for a beat?

Nov 19, 2008 3:58 am Report Abuse

If I call to see this flop, my tourney life is over. My table image at this point was very aggressive, and I had just taken down two large pots in three hands. I just didn't want to get involved.

You folded??? You had 10k in chips and only 360 to call. I have to say bad fold, but turned into a great one!!! Those flops are tricky ppl can have a bunch of draws, and you feel like you need the board to pair for you to win. Jacks can get you in a lot of trouble.....especially if u played!

how in the world did u fold jj preflop with only a raise to 360??? it was a terrible fold but u lucked out and he caught a str8 but that was a horrible fold.. u had him dominated preflop

Here's my rationale:

This was an aggressive table, and at the time, I had the reputation of being the table maniac. I was more afraid of the UTG limp than I was with the early raise. Sure, the implied odds are certainly there to hit a set with a raise to 360, but I was afraid of a raise behind me. The UTG limper has shown a lot of aggression up until that point, so my biggest fear was a limp reraise to a point where I wouldn't be able to profitably call.

I folded because I thought it would be throwing away 360 chips.

lol....
watchdog26 Nov 19, 2008 4:20 am

Wow you need to retitle this blog 1st of all.

2nd: Your rationale is completely flawed. Throw away the 4th best starting hand because you feared what might happen?

That is what I call scared poker, and scared poker = bad uprofitable poker

ryai3 Nov 19, 2008 4:25 am
thank u watchdog u took the words right out of my brain and typed them out for me... good comment
jcup235 Nov 19, 2008 4:32 am
Your read told you the UTG player was slow playing a big hand. You were wrong but thats fine. Players have to trust they're reads and play accordingly. According to the read you made your play was solid and disciplined. No ones reads are 100%. So no reason to put down your lay down.

N FOLD You apparantly were well tuned in on your opponets actions. Good poker instincts. WTG

watchdog26 Nov 19, 2008 4:49 am

ok well I can't stop laughing right now. I'll tell you why.

1st) not willing to call 360 with JJ is insane IMHO

2nd) those of you who are saying "good fold" "good instincts" ect. seem to be forgetting one thing. Had he been in the hand the cards would have come out completely different because unlike a live game the cards are cont. shuffled online, which means the more time passes or the quicker it goes by the cards will come out different. That's how and RNG works.

On the surface it seems his intincts were good, but in reality it was scared poker, because he focused on seeing the future loss instead of focusing on potential profit. Thinking like that will kill your chipstack in the end.

jcup235 Nov 19, 2008 5:02 am
So what you are saying watchdog, is that you have never and will never fold a PP jacks or better pre flop? You won't even stop to consider that you could be behind? And if you think about it you're being a wuss? Is that about right? Just curious
bigpoppaboats Nov 19, 2008 5:14 am

In tournament play, it is better to make the small mistake ie, not calling with the best pre, than a large one, calling and getting sucked into losing most of your stack.

Although I probably would have called, I am sure I also would have folded after the flop with all the action. so although it was a questionable fold pre it had a good outcome and in tourney play thats winning in my book !!!

Good Job.

Peace, J

JJ is pretty but they're not as good as they look. But 360 to call and I got 10 K. I'd have called too. And, while they lost here they'd be a winner most of the time (assuming unknown pockets).
watchdog26 Nov 19, 2008 5:49 am

No jcup235 that's not what I'm saying at all. I have folded many a pocket pair pre-flop including KK, however that's when I was being forced to commit 50% of my stack or more.

In this case folding JJ to a raise that constitutes 3% of your stack because your afraid of what might take place behind you then your playing scared. In fact with JJ in this spot your best bet is to reraise in order to actually find out if your fears are correct or not.

p0ker_j0ker Nov 19, 2008 5:54 am
have to agree 100% with watchdog, If you reraise it here chances are you take the pot outright or at least get heads up vs 1of the 2 and in any case you are way ahead of them, Not to mention like was already said since it is online poker if you are in the pot the flop will be different.
bjohn13 Nov 19, 2008 6:16 am

It sounds to me like most of the responses here are results oriented. You get the benefit of seeing the hand history. My read was that UTG was preparing to limp-raise with a big pair. I had yet to see her limp. Limping UTG looked extremely suspicious. My read was wrong. It happens.

You give up 63% equity, and justify your action by the result...hmmmmmmm

bjohn13 Nov 19, 2008 1:43 pm
lol....you're the one justifying the action by the result. You have the luxury of knowing what the cards were. It's easy to say "you should have called" or "you should have raised" when you know what everyone was holding. I had to go off of a read.
Pokahhh Nov 19, 2008 2:51 pm
Watchdog hit the nail on the head..

Are you playing to win or just cash..?
bjohn13 Nov 19, 2008 4:30 pm

let's recap, since many of you don't seem to get it.

1) I was the maniac at an aggressive table. Going back over stats this morning, I noted that I had raised preflop 9 of the last 11 hands.

2) UTG is an aggressive player. Up until this point, she had, over the course of 30 hands, limped once...and it was from the button. All of her other preflop plays were either raises or folds.

3) UTG had, by this point, struck me as a fairly good player. I had to not only assume that she was capable of limp-raising with a big pair...I had to expect that she was thinking of doing just that with a maniac sitting just a few seats behind her. In fact, I could think of no other reason why she would limp from UTG.
