Mirco Buy-In Tournaments

Nov 19, 2008 2:43 am Report Abuse

I'm back again. This time to talk about mirco buy in tournaments.

After you have played freerolls and the odd $1.25 SNG. You might want to push into playing micro tornaments like the $1-$5 tournaments on full tilt, or the $0.10c $1000 guaranteed.

Now I myself have managed to cash in the $0.10 tournament thats on eveyday at 17.35(i think) im in Ireland so its 10.35 when it starts here. Its possible dont let the 3600 players haunt you into not caring about it.

- The first thing you must realise before playing a micro buyin tournament is that there might not be very good competition. Maybe a person who is bored and is up for a games of poker without ever playing before in their lifes. This may seem like a good thing because of the fact that you are better then them but just think of all the bad beat blogs on railbirds. The odds are a person with no experience will go all in more and therefore give people more bad beats.

- The other thing is that there will be people playing these tournament who dont care and will go all in with nothing for the fun of it.

- I would much rather play a tournament with a slighty higher buy-in...$1 - $5, When playing these you may want to ajust your play a little because in my own opinion, buy-ins are harder then freerolls. Most players playing know more about the game and will be thinking more, making it harder.

Tips

- Dont enter a tournament that will distroy your bankroll. eg.. have $15-20 in your account before you start playing $1 buy-ins. Odds on winning are not great so you dont want to be risking a big chunk of your bankroll.

If possible keep to the 5% rule i mentioned in my previouse blog.(Have $20 before playing $1 tourney, push it to 10% or 15% if you like. Thats up to you but to mentain a healthy bankroll keep it at 5%.

- Also remember this, because i have been caught out so many times myself. Check previous tournaments that are the same as the oe you are entering to see how long they last. I registered for a $2 tourney and there was only 30 people in when i registered, and it started in 40mins. I went away and came back about 15mins into it and realised that 30 people had gone to 460 people. This tornament started at 12.00am Ireland Time and would of lasted a good 3 - 4 hours and i cant stay up that late. Might not seem like much but if your bankroll is $15 den $2 is a big enough lump.

- The good thing about MTT's is that if you go really deep then you are rewared with a nice bit a dosh. So if you win a tournament and come out with $300. Dont start playing big massive tournaments. Stick to 5% and play $15 buy-ins at the most.

- One more point if you do win that big tournament and come out with the $300. Dont start playing $15 buyins straight away. Wait until you think your game is good enough. The difference in players as you go up the ladder is big. Take your time, get to the stage were you feel your good enough then move up.

I have one more point for you. If your playing a $1 tournament with $20 in your account and your get knocked out early then by all means enter another. But then if your knocked out of the 2nd one fast...Thats it, leave it at that. Chill out, go for a walk, have a cup of tea and then play the next day. Dont be like'''You thats a load of $£%£, Im going register again and win because i was just really really really unlucky. Thats the sign of you going on ON TILT, Its a fantastic way to be.......if you want to lose more money. Bottom line never play to regain the money you lost. Play later when you up for a game, not because you feel you need to get your 2 bucks back.

I hope these few tips will help the upcoming players here on railbirds.

Good luck.

5% is waaaay too high, 1% of your bankroll is a much better rule, also $1-$5 buy in tournaments are like almost exactly like freerolls, and if there's really bad people playing in the tournament that increases your chances of making money, it doesn't decrease it in the 10 cent rebuy, just play solid hands and bet for value.

Thanks for the blog kenny. There is some very good advice in there. I have a long way to go myself. But small steps work for me. GL to you.

i thinking of something more reasonable for a freeroller. 1%, so that person has to have $100 to play a $1 tournament, how long do you think it would take for a person playing just freerolls to make $100.

And thats what i mean. You have your AK and some donk goes all in pre flop with 10 7. Your most likely going to call and then they hit their cards and your gone. I know it wont happen all the time but it does happen. If the person was a good payer they would call or fold and then you can play poker. Bluff him. See if he has you bet, but some people like to get it all in without seeing a flop. There the ones im saying to look out for.

First of all, if you only have 20 dollars in your bankroll you shouldn't be playing mtt's at all, you should be playing sngs to grind up your bankroll. And second of all, you should be glad if you go all in with AK preflop against 10 7 because you have 66% equity and it is obviously a +EV move, just because you lost doesn't make it a bad play on your part, and if you really think that you can get deep in a multi table tournament without risking your chips on a play that isn't 100% or even 80% likely that you are going to win then you are kidding yourself. That is why 100 buy ins is recommended for mtt's because the variance is soooo high.
