Team play in Poker? I want your opinion

Nov 19, 2008 1:33 am Report Abuse

This is what I believe. In the Clan Battles and the Football leagues team play is the way to play. By this I don't mean being on messenger telling each other their hands or feeding chips. I mean the whole idea is to get your Clan or Football team to the final table. When you're heads up in a hand with your on team mate or mates don't raise or reraise them even if you have the nuts. But if you must raise only raise minimum. Now if you and another team mate and the other teams players are in the same hand , if you have it raise to let the others of your team know to get out. IF THERE'S NO TEAM PLAY IN POKER THEN WHY HAVE TEAMS OR CLAN BATTLE'S??? IT'S JUST ANOTHER TOURNEY AND HAS NO SPECIAL MEANING!!! I always thought this was a very cool deal. This is the only time you can play poker as a team and that is something special. And if money is the issue that you can't play as a team member because you need the money these are the wrong tourneys for you. Because the payout starts at a very low number usually around 5th or less is the average. There's a big differnce between collusion and playing as a team. This is why I have stopped playing Clan Battles and in the Football League. Because most of my team mates are young and can't grasp this concept of the game. I mean really, getting knocked out of a clan or league game early in by your own team mate. So please tell me what you think and don't hold back, let it all out.

Thanks for Your Time,
Sandy

P.S. As you can tell this is a subject that really pisses me off. And I would really like to get some Prorails opinions on this as well.

Poker is a 1 person sport in my eyes , as for the team part in this all i can say the best thing to do is ROOT for your team and not softplay .... b/c if you softplay you are only cheating yourself in the long run .
ButtonDog Nov 19, 2008 1:41 am
I believe that it's in the clan rules that you will play your best even when heads up against another team member. Not sure if that's a rule in the football league.
RoseG42 Nov 19, 2008 1:42 am

It is a rule in the football games also.

No team play, can root, but each person is to try their best to win.

I have no problem sticking to the RBCL rules - I think these were put in place to avoid any suggestion of collusion - an account suspending offence at Tilt.

Although, I do agree there would be more point to it if the play was different to 'ordinary' private games..........
TalloneTX Nov 19, 2008 1:46 am

I agree with some of your comments. I try not to knockout my team mates, But you need the rules concerning team play . If the coaches think there was any collusion the team can be penalized. I am not a young player as I am 54. T he idea of our team play is to collect as many points as possible for the team.

I agree with you Sand, but I think you're gonna have a hard time convincing others... GL
kardchik Nov 19, 2008 1:48 am
I hate knocking out my clan mates but I will bet them like I would any other player.
killmequick Nov 19, 2008 1:49 am
ehh i would much rather it be a one person game. If i was playing on a "poker team" and was dealt Railbirds card: AsRailbirds card: Ac im not gonna give up my hand to a buddy who is reraising in front of me..i mean the only way to let him know you have aces is to tell him, and that is against poker rules.
jseth Nov 19, 2008 1:49 am

I think that 1 sick fishy nailed it - for me, clan or team play is about having other folks to cheer on when I'm not in a hand... but when I play, I play to win - and I think that is the way most folks look at it.

Like jonnie said, it would be interesting to actually "play partners" or something, but when all is said and done, it's about the last player standing...

Krafty3333 Nov 19, 2008 1:53 am
I completely agree with this blog. If it is not about team, it is just another tournament. Think a little bit about that! This is also the reason I will stop playing RBCL games and I'll play football league just because a friend ask me to,
bigword Nov 19, 2008 1:54 am
i think the concept is, how many of your players are good enough to survive a tourny. I dont know, lol. its weird. i thought i had a good idea, but i cant put it into words. never mind.
leavem Nov 19, 2008 1:54 am

What you are suggesting is soft play, which is against the rules of most poker sites, at FTP and PS for sure.

I have watched the world cup (I think it is called) on tv and while they play as a team, they all are out to win. I may not necessarily want to knock out my teammates, just like in a regular game I may not want to knock out a friend, but I will take anyone's chips.

PapaPower Nov 19, 2008 1:56 am

It really sucks to get KO'd by a teammate.

BUT, you know what? I would REALLY be pissed if I found out that my teammate softplayed the nuts to deliberately keep me in the game.

Now, on the other hand, I have witnessed some teammates make HUGE bets HU to knock me off a hand when they have me outchipped and they hold nothing in their hand and calling would put me all in. That kinda play really aggravates me...........

1_Sick_Fishy Nov 19, 2008 1:58 am
soft-play :

To intentionally go easy on a player (e.g. not betting or raising against him when you usually would).

Syrnion Nov 19, 2008 2:06 am
I can't go easy like that. It just dose not seem right to me. I JUST joined a clan, and so it is a new topic to me though, so I have to wait and see what happens.
gorden71 Nov 19, 2008 2:14 am
You already know my opinion, I am lacksboss on PS. I do understand your position but this is the second time Ive seen you say whoever doesnt agree must be young and cant grasp the concept. You are really digging yourself a hole pre-judging people when you are DEAD WRONG!!!! What you suggest is cheating, there is no other answer.
GirlLynn Nov 19, 2008 2:16 am

U PLAY FOR YOURSELF FIRST THEN THE TEAM U REPRESENT. U DONT FOLD TO A TEAM MATE.

ITS CLANS BUT IF U WIN THEN YOUR CLAN WON

CaseAce Nov 19, 2008 2:25 am
what you describe as playing as a team is generally called "soft playing", and it is against the rules at most sites including ftp and ps

ABSOLUTELY NOT! Team play is COLLUSION, Collusion is CHEATING!! PERIOD! and there is absolutely no room in poker for cheating or cheaters.
As for events like the RailBird Clan League and the Clan Challenges I always explain it like the Olympics, every event and every player are expected to do their very best WITHIN THE RULES OF THE GAME. It is only their finishs that are added together for a Team score.
If you are doing anything other then playing your very best individual game within ALL the rules of poker and the poker sites then YOU ARE A CHEATER!
SwtLilTabbie Nov 19, 2008 2:39 am
I agree with IronMan and well I agree with just about everyone here. There is no team play. Always play to win, No matter who is in the hand!
