Sometimes You Need A Break

Nov 18, 2008 7:48 pm Report Abuse

And sometimes, breaks are thrust upon you. I know I haven't been around lately, but there's good reason… I was putting the finishing touches on my first book!

On August 29, 2005 Hurricane Katrina made landfall near the Louisiana/Mississippi border, forever changing the lives of thousands of people. One of the most devastated areas was New Orleans’ Lower Ninth Ward, submerged beneath millions of gallons of water, in some places by as much as ten feet.

My book is a collection of photographs documenting three years of loss and recovery, destruction and rebuilding, and despair and hope in one of New Orleans’ oldest neighborhoods. So if you're looking for something other than poker, please stop by and check it out. It makes a great present for Christmas, Hannukah or Kwanzaa!

Stutz,

I sincerely hope that before you insult someone else you think twice.

Not that it's any of your business, but I was donating money to local charities before I even thought of the book. During the storm, my mother and I sheltered evacuees at her home in Mississippi. 16 people, plus pets and children in a two-bedroom house. We organized food and gasoline runs, we donated clothing to the Red Cross and I have also helped to remediate houses. Let me also inform you that my own home flooded in the aftermath of the storm and I'm still rebuilding it without the help of the Louisiana Road Home Program or the Federal Government. So you might say that 100% of the profits are going to help those affected by the storm.

I didn't write this book to make money, though I certainly hope I do. I wrote it to remind the world that one small neighborhood was virtually wiped off the face of the planet and that it's trying to slowly pull itself back together. At the end of the book are a list of local organizations which people can contact to help out and a list of local bloggers who are fighting to bring New Orleans back from a devastating tragedy.

I sincerely hope that meets with your approval. Thanks for wishing me luck.

Thank you Papa, and the rest of you! Hopefully I can play a little more poker now. At least until I start work on the next book!
