Qs in early position

Nov 18, 2008 6:14 pm Report Abuse

OK, the first hand of a tourney (so you don't know much about your opponents) how do you play pocket ladies in early position?

- bet big to whittle down the field?

- all in?

- raise?

- or smooth call?

Money tourney raise like you normally would.

Freeroll you might want to just limp and see what happens after ya.

3-4 x the bug blind and hope no one re-raises you. That early in the game the ones that do call your raise probally have atleast an ace.

3x the big blind,if you get a re-raise,be careful. If the flop doesnt hurt you, make a continuation bet and pray!!

Questions 1 and 2 - First hand of a tourney, limited information, QQ early position, bet big to whittle down the field?
In my game, QQ is hard as heck to get off of pre-flop. Reason being, there are few hands that will beat me. AA and KK will have me crushed, but I know the odds of them being dealt one of these specific hands preflop is around 1%. The other hand I worry about is the good old horse race against AK. Odds are roughly 82-1 (about 1.2%) that they will have that. Either way, I like my odds. So, to answer the question, I raise them. I don't raise them 3xBB (60 chips) like the poor lady did on me the other day with AA (which I called with my suited connectors and flopped trips, turned a full house, and busted her out). Nope, I put a gun to their head and raise them enough to separate the rock stars from the groupies...
In a ring game, I am always going to play them like the best hand. In a tourney, I can’t rebuy, so I have to play them differently. I'm a tight/aggressive style, so i don't see a lot of flops (around 20%), but when I get in a hand, I have to maximize it...
Question 3 - Allin?
With limited player info, first hand, etc., its hard to say...I've played it both ways and had about the same result. I always try to return and fight another day in a tourney. Is someone pushing you allin, and if so, what position are they in, how many people besides them etc. Lot of variables here....
Question 4 (Raise) has been answered, so Question 5, Smooth Call?
There are those who will do that, and I will do that in early position strategically to do a couple of things...
1) I will do it if I intend to reraise and push any raise...this works for me, most of the time.
2) As long as I am willing to fold them on the flop...by smooth calling and allowing several players to see a flop, you've just set yourself for the ol' 9-7 two pair flop...and how can you be sure?
I’ve folded them a couple of times and it turned out right and I’ve also not folded them MORE than a couple of times and it turned out wrong… There are a whole lot of dynamics with playing this hand. Personally, I think one of the queens is always my exwife…and I either play them hard or play 'em like deuces...
I hope this helps. And for those who are reading this to gather info on my style...remember, I could be lying...chuckle.
