Running bad?

Nov 18, 2008 11:40 am Report Abuse

I've had a terrific run of bad luck recently and I came up with this idea of how to gauge how bad things really are and I thought I'd pass it along.

Try freerolls. Seriously. If you just can't seem to win a hand, no matter how far ahead you are at the beginning of it, it may be time to stop using the BR. What better way can you gauge how you're running without risking anything. Yeah, we all know they're donkfests. But since we do, we should be able to nimbly navigate around the donks and work our way to a respectable finish. If you're still finding yourself losing, even playing your best, stick with it until your luck turns around. Don't punish the bankroll. If you're running bad why put more on the line?

The genesis of this stemmed from taking a series of small hits to my BR all in a row. So I jumped into an NBC HU freeroll on FTP. Fortunately, I was paired up with a nice woman who really didn't have the time to play. So she told me her hands in the hopes that I'd knock her out. Needless to say, I was way ahead every time. And lost every hand. She was so apologetic, but it wasn't her fault. I was/am running bad and I knew it. On the first hand I told her, "Alright, I'll double you up", because I knew I'd lose. And sure enough, I did. Four straight hands--out. Needless to say, things haven't improved much. I hit a minor cash in tonight's razz event. And I've hit up the PAD freerolls. Luck's still the same. What's worse is I'm getting hands. They're just not holding up. And I'm not playing stupid. So I'm going to stick with the freerolls until things start to turn around. I may try some different tactics to see if I can add a new dimension to my game that will get me through the bad runs.

Anyway, good luck to everyone. I certainly hopes the idea helps somebody.

I hear your pain. I keep watching those river cards drown me and ask, "What did I do wrong?". My BR is down approximately 40 percent and will take no more abuse. So I'm gonna wait and turn this thing around using your freeroll idea.

Good luck, and thanks for the tip.

I agree totaly withyour idea...it works too...you know when to go back to real money....one question....what is pad freerolls?

Yeah, I was just in another freeroll. Laid down KK, good fold. Laid down QQ, bad fold. Got AA, 15/30 blinds, gets raised to 90. I raise to 150, trying to limit exposure. Get re-raised to 210, four callers. Flop comes Ks10s6d. I bet 450, get raised to 900, it's folded around to me. I've gotta push as I've only got 510 left. Of course, I get called for 60 with JsJd. Sure enough, runner-runner spades and I'm gone. I don't know that I could have done anything else to win that hand. JJ wasn't going anywhere no matter how big the pre-flop was. Needless to say, I'm sticking with the freerolls until this thing straightens itself out.

Poker After Dark (PAD), it's a show on NBC late night. They do a "dream table" where the winner from FTP goes to Vegas and hand picks the pros he wants to go up against. Six-handed table for $120K, winner take all.

Ok gotcha...how often does those freerolls start?..I see them sitting there.

Freerolls don't really work for me since I will be donking it around anyway. I drop down to the lowest limits and tighten up my game, I stop making plays and only risk all the chips when I have the absolute nuts. This is not a way to get big into the money but getting close or ITM will help your confidence and then you can loosen up again and try new plays.
