letting go of aces is neccesary......knowing when is the trick ......shove in preflop vulnerable to pocket pairs hitting sets......play the flop is vulnerable to anything......hit a monster at times can be tough to get paid off.......

Raise Raise Raise!

Raise 3 to 4x times big blind. I always raise Aces pre-flop.
tennkid777 Nov 17, 2008 9:30 pm
A's in my view is the only pair u can slow play preflop. I have done it with K's too and got paid but i most of the time i raise but with A's i like to slow play sometimes and i get paid on that also. Its all about the players and the feel of the table.
vollski69 Nov 17, 2008 9:37 pm
i would raise becuase if you dont you will let bad hands make good ones on the flop. We all hate when that happens

The problem with not raising AA for value UTG, especially at a full table, is you're inviting substandard hands to look you up (and more than likely crack you). The lower the stakes, the more this is true. Online a 3x bb raise UTG gets disrespected a lot. I like to raise 5x BB UTG with AA at a full table, as it says "look me up if you're dumb enough or foolish enough to".

But, let's say you minraised at a full table with AA, and got 5 callers. This isn't the situation you want with a premium pocket pair, as they do not fare well in a multiway pot. You want to be heads up against a single opponent, and that's what the 5x BB raise is intended to do. Anything smaller than that, and you're flirting with FPS - Fancy Play Syndrome - and financial disaster.

Now, as the table size shrinks down from 9 to about 5 or so, and you know there are some desparate short stacks behind you ready to go all in at a moment's notice, I don't mind an occasional (read 25% or less) limp with AA UTG, but you got to be 80% or more sure you're going to get shoved on when you do. If you're that sure you're going to get shoved on, you usually know who's going to do it, so limping can be a good way to target someone you know is in pushbot mode. It can also blow up in your face, too, so be careful when limping AA UTG. Make sure all of your conditions are there before even trying it.

No matter what, however, you can't make the same play every time or players will eventually figure out that when you raise UTG you have aces, and that's not good for you. You have to vary it. Sometimes you have to raise 5x BB, sometimes 4x, and 3, but the majority of the time should be 5x (especially at a full table). You can raise 3x if you think you'll get reraised by an aggressive opponent behind you, so you can come over the top of him, but I'd only make that play about 15-20% of the time. 80-85% of the time, I'm pumping it up 5x.

Shortstacked in a tournament, you must shove this hand if your M is 10 or less. Shoving with an M of 10 or less with AA UTG is +cEV and in a tournament you always want to make +cEV moves.

It isn't how you play AA that matters, its the level of play that is important. I usually play SNG 5 bucks or lower. At that level of play, you can never know what people will play. I will raise 4 times the BB with AX, where X=A-10. Position also comes into play, but I will only consider the bet variable to keep it simple. I also raise that amount with JJ and higher pairs. If I am on a pair 10 or lower, I just call.

In answer to my raise, I have seen everything from true garbage to competent hands. I have seen people raise me after the flop and show trips, and other times it's garbage all the way. It is almost impossible to judge hands at that buy-in. I get busted on rockets as much as I am successful, I just chalk it up to computer 'randomness' and move on when I get busted.

just be aggressive. but know when ur beatten
house71bb Nov 17, 2008 10:07 pm

I think, it is better to raise AA always. 4 BB's is ok. Slowplay is very dangerous.

monsternuts26 Nov 17, 2008 10:07 pm
For me, I play pocket aces differently sometimes from UTG. It really depends on the table I'm sitting at. If there's a really loose agressive player at my table, I might limp them in. But for the most part I raise.
Makwa Nov 17, 2008 10:11 pm
What are stack sizes, position re bubble if tourney, other player styles? Not enuff info at all. Generally, raise.
FokFok Nov 17, 2008 10:14 pm
Well it dependes on the type of player you show you are, and the table, sometimes when i'm at a table and first get AA i bet, when it happens more two or three times i do a slow play, it depends on the reading u have from the people you're playing and what u have done so far.
geowind Nov 17, 2008 10:17 pm
minumun raise
MichaelRedd43 Nov 17, 2008 10:17 pm

Don't try to be cute... just raise because if someone else has a hand they will call or shove all in... if you just call then like 4 people will limp in and you have no idea how good there hands are

20_lb_stack Nov 17, 2008 10:24 pm
I've played them every way you can from a fold to a limp to an all-in. In general, I think a raise is usually better, unless your read on the table calls for another play. The key is sizing it right, so stacks, reads and the situation all come into play when planning my strategy. I'd alway much rather go into the flop against one opponent and be an 80 percent favorite, than a coin flip against multiple callers.
Brodie87 Nov 17, 2008 10:33 pm
limp and kick their asses (seriously that IS what I do but it IS tricky as hell)
SVarG Nov 17, 2008 10:35 pm
I always raise 4x or 5x the BB, or All In, if you see that a player is calling everything.....
Bells666 Nov 17, 2008 10:45 pm

It all depends on the table im playing. UTG on a loose table, i tend to limp, hoping for a raise that i can then re-raise. It also depends on how i percieve my table image to be. If I have been caught out with an UTG bluff then i will go ahead and raise it up.

Highstakesplay Nov 17, 2008 10:57 pm
on Highstakes Paul Wasika (UTG) Limps w AA like everybody but 1 calls and it was the worst way to play this hand but after nothing on the flop n someone sittin w trip 4's and another big hand Paul let the hand go w only losing 1BB where he would have lost a lot of money if kept on w his AA...i think if this hand is played wrong ic can be as useless as AK at times
20dragons Nov 17, 2008 10:57 pm
My least favorite play with AA is when I'm in the big blind and everyone folds it around... In the absence of any hard information on my opponents, I'll just throw in a standard raise (usually 3BB, sometimes more, sometimes less) and see what happens. My main goal pre-flop is to limit the number of people in the pot to 2 or 3, no more.
