Bankroll Management-avoiding tilt & limits

Nov 16, 2008 9:36 am Report Abuse

I am a person that is very prone to tilt. I usually win fairly quickly and big for a long time then after a bad beat lose even quicker because after a loss I may get on tilt and play in a limit too high for my BR whilst on tilt. I decided I would write this for myself so I have something to stick by to avoid my problem. This is purely for me so it may not be right for your skill level or your BR but you can learn from this if you get my general ideas and amounts and perhaps write a short one for yourself.

HOW MUCH DO I NEED TO PLAY AND HOW TO AVOID TILT:

HU: Playing HU is a great way to make or break a BR. So stay clear of HU on tilt and you will end up with a nice looking BR (If you are good offcourse)

To play a HU game make sure you have at least 15 buy ins. Stop when you lose

  • One game

If you have at least 30 buy ins then:

  • Stop after losing 2 HU in a row

Cash Table: Once again playing on a cash table is a great way to make or break a BR. If you are on tilt on a cash table it is the quickest way to kill your br. And you might even move up limits to try win back your losses which will usually fail horribly.

To play on a cash table make sure you have:

  • If your BR is small and you want to try your luck at least 5 times the buy in but it is much better if you have at least 20-30 times the buy and in an ideal world 100 times the the buy in but this will be slower to obtain but a lot safer and better.

Stop after losing:

  • If you have around or less than 10 times the buy in stop when you lose half your buy in
  • If you have >15 times the buy in stop when you lose your buy in. (if you multi table like me stop when you lose whatever adds up to your usual buy in).
  • This is leaving limit is so low because playing on a cash table whilst on tilt is so very dangerous

45 Seaters:
This is a slow but profitable way to build a BR because you will lose a few then win fairly big.
  • To play this you must have at least 30 buy ins
  • You must stop playing after playing 3 games and not cashing

MTTs:

MTTs are a very slow way to build a BR. You will generally lose and make small cashings but eventually you win big time.

  • To play an MTT you must have at least 30 times the buy in but it is a lot better if you have around 100.
  • I recommend before playing an MTT earn the buy in by playing on a cash table or a small SNG

MTTs is good in the way that it is not dangerous to your BR if you get on tilt (if you play in the right limits). This is because it is a very long and slow process. Therefore:

  • Stop only when you are no longer enjoying the game

Because this is for me this is probably very different to other BR management articles and blogs. I suggest you read this and write what amounts and rules you will follow because everybody’s BR management shouldn’t be based on what someone like Chris Feruson used. You need to adapt it for yourself.

I have spent a some time writing this so if you liked this blog or have something to say please give me feedback in the comments. I will let you know how using this goes.

If you want to learn more about BR management read my other blog. It is about the mistakes I have made and some important lessons to follow. It had even won a competition so it may be helpful. Leave your comments there I like hearing feedback

Nice blog Sida. I'm not one to tilt much but after two games (usually MTT), if I'm feeling in a bad mood I recognize it as tilting, switch off and walk away. My bankroll is precious to me, I treat it like a pet. Try to feed and nurture it, take it for walks, give it the occasional flea bath....Seriously though, after playing for almost a year off hard won freeroll cash, I would say managing a tendency to tilt is marginally more important than (and has a pivotal role in) bankroll management.

HU games are a big no-no for hotheads.

I still play the 5c/10c cash tables. I look for a conservative table and buy-in for the $10 max. If I'm doing well I double-up and then stand up. I don't believe in the idea that it's bad form to 'hit-and-run', you're there to win cash, not give it away . If you are confident in your game, low limit cash tables combined with patience are a great way to earn the buy-in for any MTT you want to play. It's also a good way to earn points for ironman on full tilt, without taking a hit to your bankroll. Once I lose my $10, that's it for me, I walk away.

Agree also with playing the 45 player games. Great for when you want to play but are not in the right frame of mind for hours of play in a big tournament. If your confident, the payout is also better in a 45 rather than a 90 player game.
