Defend your blinds?

Nov 15, 2008 9:55 pm Report Abuse

I would like to see feedback on the idea of defending your blinds. Just get different input on the thoughts. I have read a pro saying when in the SB or BB your first thought should always be fold to raises because you are out of position unless you have a strong hand, I have heard other pros saying defend your blinds or you will be a target , and others saying defend the button, dont worry about your blinds, but in tournaments I have been in it seems someone lots of times hits a strange hand and gets paid off very well. and afterwards they say it was my blind. personally I think fold first but depends on who and how many times they have raised my blind if I think they are playing good hands or just playing there position to get my chips. but wondering what others think

It is very read, and player dependent. Im in the school of defending my blind with a good range of cards( but stay away from rags if you are defending)
But like I said it has to be read dependent if there is a rock in the cut off who never raises than makes its 3 or 4 x to go you should probably toss that BB unless you have enough chips and are gonna set mine, knowing you can get away from it after the flop misses your pair.

SWITCH
depends on your reads if you think someone is just stealing and then you have to defend ro they will keep taking advantage of you
if you have crap just fold em ( especially on a tight table with good players)
in a freeroll it does not matter much

i'll do it against a weak/tight player, because it is very easy to take the pot away from them on a board full of baby cards. But against LAGgies its not a good idea. Thats just how i look at it, it just depends on your playing style

i think if it depends on the type of player u are. if u are a very self discliplined player i think its smart to defend ur blinds cuz u have the ability to fold after flop where as loose players can get crazy post flop with a marginal hand and it ultimately will cost u a lot of chips

i haaate to play marginal hands out of position. Nuff said.

A very good question. I don't have a good answer. My thoughts generally agree with those already expressed. A lot depends on your stack, your table image, and your read on your opponents.

Alot of different things go into the decision making of wether you should or should not defend your blinds. I personally would rather fold than get myself into a situation that i cant get out of. But if your up against a player constantly challenging you. I think its always a good thing to push back every once and awhile. Even if you have 7 2 offsuit. Obviously they cant have a hand evertime.

On the other side. If the plalyer acting before you is tight, unless you really have something you feel comfortable getting into a hand with. I think its a safe bet to just go ahead and fold.

I think its just all personal preference. I think the pros that were for defending blinds are probably loose, or very aggresive players themsleves. Its not likely a tight solid player will give you the advice to get into a hand with a super aggresive person. Unless you hit the flop like a champ, your gonna lose the pot. Your out of position against an already raised, aggresive person.

But like i said, All personal preference. Its really upto the player to decide. Dont be persuaded to change your game just because someone, wether it be a pro or not says to. Playing poker is alot about what works for you.

Followup: someone just tried (i think) to defend their blind badly. I raise to 4xBB with pocket K's. BB then re-raise all-in. I called. He had 6-7s. He lost.

early in a tourney I let it go, but late in a tourney I wont let it go if I think someone is just trying to steal.
