poker language

Nov 14, 2008 12:01 am Report Abuse

I was watching the world series of poker on ESPN last week .A player said something in Russian . The player next to him protested and the Russian player was taken away from the table to discuss the statement . This was not called a penalty but he did miss a couple of hands . The complaintant stated that the tourny was english speaking only. Now my question is when in a tourny on the WPT is the language at the table that of the host country or is english the language of poker ? When watching WPT matches on tv they are speaking english.

I never really knew there was an official language for a poker tournament. I can understand the online games to be English only, as so there is not collusion from players in other places. A live tournament though? I think the official language should be if there is one, the language of the country hosting the tournament. Could you imagine Phil Hellmuth going beserk because he had to remain silent as he could not speak Italian to tell a player off.

English only is the rule everywhere in poker. Don't know the reasons why but this is universal.
