Nov 12, 2008 5:07 pm Report Abuse

Yesterday, while playing in the freeroll, I observed something (yet again) that really grates on me sometimes. A guy gets his queens outflopped, can't get away from them, then berates the other player as a "donk". Its the verbal abuse thing that grates me...

First of all, you had QQ in the BB (last to act preflop), the blinds were 40 and you raised 40 more to 80. Not sure what the reasoning was there, we all have to play our own game and you have the right to raise QQ 1xbb if you choose. You got 4 callers, of course. At best, your QQ just became a coinflip situation (45%)...

Flop came 559. You push, got one caller and he had Q5. End of story? No, you berated the poor guy (almost thought you were Phil Hellmuth for a moment) for making what you thought to be a bad call preflop...when in fact, you gave him an opportunity to see a flop at over 6-1. Most of the time, I just let that kind of stuff go. This morning, I had to say something.

Railbirds is a great community. If we could do one thing that would make it better, it would be to muzzle these guys who can't be (at least) civil.

Oh, and Phil, I took the proper notes on how you played that hand. Hopefully, it will come in handy and you can abuse me for it in the near future. If the money is right, I'll even dance a jig for you while you call me a donk. I only hope the poor guy or gal (your fellow railbird) you slammed yesterday didn't take it too personally. Hope they're pretty thickskinned, that their personal life isn't like so many people's these days...hard, That your comments didn't do any damage to an already fragile self-esteem...you get the picture. But then, if you cared about others, you probably wouldn't have said the things you did to your fellow railbird?

Nah, the "donk" who had the audacity to make the correct mathmatical call was probably thinking, "Darn, I wish this guy would shut up and help me stack all of these chips..."

OMG .. Love this blog . Last week I had a player who sucked out on me 7 times ... not complaining .. he had good hands and a reason to want to see the river ... tell me I played bad .. even though I was way ahead every time i had my chips in a big pot LOL.

its one thing to get mad at another player cuz they beat u with an inferior hand, but its another thing to do it in a FREEroll......this cost a u nothing to enter and u have the chance to win FREE money...evry1 in the FREEroll is basically playing with house money and can afford to play some crap hands and hope to get lucky....

i have learned in the past years, the one calling people donk is usually the donk.
Canada_Ad_Guy27 Nov 12, 2008 5:51 pm
Saw the same kind of thing last week. Guy min raises pre flop with AJ offsuit and gets called by 44. Guy hits an ace on flop, but other guy makes a set on flop. Guy with AJ goes all in, gets called, loses, then continues to call the guy a donk. What a joke.

i had a very similar situation the other day during a FR. I was severely short stacked and drew AA, another player had raised (about half my chips which wasn't much and I called - figured I would wait for his cbet to put me all in probably not best call there but hey... figured I needed some more chips and it was only decent hand I had really gotten and if I was gonna go out at least I would feel good about it... LOL)

ANYWAY, flop came Q and a couple rainbow rags... he did cbet and I called with the rest of my chips. Just us in the pot and we flipped he showed Qrag (one of the rags ont he table) so he had 2 pair and I was just hoping agsint hope not to get knocked out by a Qrag... 4th street gave me an Ace and that is when the complaining started.... but it got worse after the river showed Q giving me the nut boat... not only did he start complaining and calling me a donk another at the table joined in and they were both berating me calling me a donk and how great it was that at least I didn't win too many chips... REALLY!!???

I ended up going out a couple hands later on AKs when I called a rather high preflop raise (hey I defend that, again I was still shortstacked and had been getting mostly crap hands) I lost to trip 3s (I had my 2 pair AA and KK). These guys start in again, laughing and calling me a donk among other things and I thought to myself that I was so glad that MOST of the birdies in the nest aren't like that but what about new players who come in and think that sort of behavior is OK.

I took my beating and didn't complain even thoguh the guy who won (the same guy who had lost earlier) did so with an 83o and they were congratulating him! (he had flpped the pair and the set was made on the 4th street) by that time I was already all in.

I didn't say anything because I was in shock and was trying to figure out WHAT I would say. After the next hand the taqble got closed and it didn't matter anyway.

I don't care if I HAD made donk moves (which I didn't) but STILL that doesn't give people the right to belittle and berate others just because the cards didn't fall your way or because you feel they made a bad call. BAD LUCK and BAD CALLS happen!

We are a community! or at least we are supposed to be! I think there are many among us who could stand to remember that!

Thanks for your post Ransom! I just hope some people read it and perhaps next time THINK about the way they act!

I appreciate all the positive feedback. For a while there, I thought it was just me who thought this was inappropriate...

Good Blog, Thank you.

TY for making me feel better about me.....LOL

Yesterday, early in the tourney, I got QQ mid pos... raised 4 times the BB and got 1 caller.. tried to get em out and thought I was ahead, long stroy short, I got busted out early by a 4 6 suited from the SB.

I gave my usual NH.. GG and GL all ...and then while someone else was raggin on the kid, told him he would probably not make the money playing like that and I thougt I was out of line.

Good Blog for my bad day, reminding me that humility is better than arrogance by 10-1 odds.

Peace, J

Boatking8 Nov 12, 2008 8:24 pm
Good stuff. Poker just like life blame blame blame because you make a stupid decision.
jonnie2thumbs Nov 12, 2008 9:55 pm
I agree about the abuse being a bad thing

and about the min raise with 4+ players already in the pot being bad.........

But Q5 is more of a raising hand than a calling hand lol
