Can you ever fold AA pre-flop

Nov 12, 2008 4:41 pm Report Abuse

I know, I know, never fold the best hand preflop, but if it is very early in a tourney and you only have about a 50-50 shot at winning, is that a risk you want to take early on? Blinds 25 - 50 (30 min blind structure) Starting chip count is only 1500 Time into the tourney is 15 min, (so far players are very, very loose.) I am in the BB with two Black Aces Action before me, mid position opens for $500, late position calls, Dealer and SB move all in with Zero hesitation. At a minimum I am up against two players with AA maybe 4 players total. Not great odds for a hand like AA. Do I fold the best starting hand with potentially facing 4 other players? More info coming later.

Tough one, that early in a tourney I hate to get AA. With players that loose, it is a good chance they all call. I would think a lot and hopefully get out of the hand. 33 that flops a 3 would really hurt. lol

A lot of players think that any pair is a great starting hand.

no, you dont fold the best hand. at most, they've got a coin flip and if you're lucky they're probably hold AK or something like that. If its early, no better hand to push than AA

Better to kick yourself for not playing, than to lick your wounds on the sideline

I honestly would never fold AA in that situation, because of exactly what you have said. Players are very very loose, and alot of them are just looking to deliver a bad beat or sneak by on a 60/40 and start out with 3000. If it's 4 way, I'd be less worried about running up against AA (odds are very very slim), and more worried about seeing 67 suited or something. In a hand say AA vs QQ vs AJ or AK, vs 55, you're going to be absolute gold unless you get the unforunate end of an 80/20 vs QQ or 55. 67 suited in the place of 55 however has a better chance of 2 pairing, straighting, or flushing you.

There are some places I think you could make a place for folding AA, maybe late if you're a big stack and you can easily move up money levels, however early, this should be money for you. If it DOES hold up, you are starting with 6000, which means you should be able to apply pressure and coast to cashing, if not, you got a bad beat story! =)

Pre-Flop there isn't a hand that AA is not a prohibitive favorite against. Why would you not play? Sure they get cracked just like anything else but you need to play the odds.

i have done it once and it turned out to be a great fold but not for the faint of heart lol http://www.railbirds.com/blog/210324/one-sick-mofo-of-a-fold.html
Roger1960 Nov 12, 2008 4:54 pm
I am sure at least one player has suited connecters, the worst for AA to be up against.
DtownGirl Nov 12, 2008 4:54 pm
pre-flop? hell no.
Totenbach Nov 12, 2008 5:01 pm

Yep, I have folded A's before. But that is normally deep into a tourney before the bubble. If you end up 4 or 5 handed there you are going to run into the weirdest hands possible from any small stack. And the last thing I need is to see some kid typing in "HAHAHAHAHAHAHA" as he cracks my A's with 3/10 off or the like. If you are in a strong position not worth risking, fold em.

Early Game, get em in good. Chances are you'll double/triple/quadruple/quintuple up and be laughing as now you can easily play poker from that point in.

Well I called and was up against KK, JJ, 55 Pocket 99 folded. which put me at a paltry 52% favorite (according to Poker Stove).

no you should definately not fold preflop. You play odds, and no matter what the other players are holding you have the best hand. you stand a chance to triple up with the best hand, got best pot odds and best hand odds to play, you should quit playing poker alltogether if you think you should fold preflop.
Harp66 Nov 12, 2008 5:07 pm
NEVER, hehe
dvd-GT Nov 12, 2008 5:08 pm

Short answer no, long answer hell no.

I have folded AA pre-flop once, in a qualifier with 4 players left and 3 getting a ticket, one player was sitting out and i had him out chipped.

Damnufish Nov 12, 2008 5:08 pm
You don't fold, take the lick when it inevitably happens but morons trying to help you start at 6000 should be just what you want.
ButtonDog Nov 12, 2008 5:10 pm
If there were 4 or 5 players in the hand preflop I would trust a 7 8 suited more than I would any two face cards, pairs or not. The odds just are worth investing my whole stack in that situation.
Ataxia Nov 12, 2008 5:12 pm
I did not fold, but from a statistics standpoint I was barely a favorite and felt that I could out play most of the table post flop. As it stands KK and JJ both flopped sets and I was 'dun-fer'.
JMpointG Nov 12, 2008 5:13 pm

it isn t from but i ve read several times AA could be a could fold but it was more about getting in the money at the end of a tournament.

I also heard a former winner of wsop event who had just been kicked out in the early time of another game and still said it was the good way to ply his aces.

i would have lsten to my poker guts, but there no garantee at all

StickyLixxx Nov 12, 2008 5:16 pm
I'd never fold aces preflop. I' even somtimes play em too slowly. Like in a cashgame a couple minutes a go, lost against KQ flopping trip queens.
