Need Advice

Nov 12, 2008 12:05 am Report Abuse

I need some advice. Here is the situation. The Sat after Thanksgiving a local card room is having a promotion where they are giving away $599.00 every 30 minutes for high hand. The high hands can be from Texas Hold em or Omaha games. The last time they did this in July and I went most of the high hands came from the Omaha tables becuase they get more cards.

I think this time I should play Omaha but I am not experienced in Omaha. I have played in home games and done okay but I have never played live in a casino. What do you think? If I play only pairs and suited connecters that could make high hands and if I don't hit a flop fold? Is that a stupid idea?

There is also a good chance to make money in the cash games because everyone wants to see flops.

If you have some advice - please share.

PS - in FL you can only buy in for a max of $100 at a time and the blinds are $1-2. The promotion is from 12-12. Almost every high hand was quads or better.

Depending on the size of the room I'm pretty surprised you'd see quads every hour. No question more monster hands will generally come at the Omaha tables. The question is what do your blinds cost an hour plus how likely are you to see an unraised pot? Fixed limit Omaha can be played cost effectively if you understand chip management. But chasing the hourly prize I think is foolish. Play the game you enjoy and are reasonably good playing.

As to the hands to play your about right above. Suited connectors and pairs. But that won't necessarily get you the top hand in any hour. That's merely luck.

If you are unsure of your Omaha game it might be better to stick with the game you do know VERY WELL lol. Read some of A55A55IN5 guide to get a better handle on it

where can A55A55IN5's guide(s) be found? Still a little new here.

I think 35 tables. Maybe 40 but last time very few full houses held up util late at night when it was less busy. In the hold em games you do not have to have both cards in your hand play.

My roomie plays omaha a lot and very well lol, if it isn't a game you're good at investing money in it seems to be a mistake to me , there will be more big hands in omaha but the question is will you be able to hold your own in a game you don't play often , Gl

Im confused?

You said you were at the last one, then you say you have never played in a casino before?

Either way you need to play a game you are comfortarable with playing, especisially in an attmosphere that you are not comfortarable in.

I think you would have a better chance at winning something with you $100.00, but you are right the Omaha will be the winners because of the card layout and the opportunity for Quads there.

You still have time to learn Omaha if you do not care about your $100.oo and just want a shot at the $599.00.

What ever you decide good luck to you and remember to Have Fun

i played holdem last time- either game qualifies for the high hand payouts

passion, she said that she plays hold em and the last time she was there. most of the high hands came from the omaha, she never said she was playing omaha.

Learn omaha real quick, the casino i went to, the same thing happened. omaha took almost all of the high hands.

Seriously, unless you see an influx of new Omaha players, I can't see how winning 1 Jackpot will cover the edge you are going to be giving up to experienced Omaha players.

My advice, would be to play the smallest stakes possible and just nit it up waiting for double pair hands or Ace-Ace two suited hands.

Actually, my advice would be to stick to the Holdem tables and hope it encourages some new players you can stack off.

Biggest piece of advice is not to get crazy with AA that is buried in an omaha hand. That has been the downfall of alot of people that play omaha. I play omaha quite frequently and do well in it. But i play smart when i play omaha I don't go crazy with any particular hand, unlike some of the donkeys i have encountered. if you want to know more you can PM me. I can give you a few pointers. Always willing to help someone learn how to play omaha.

I would stick with what you're comfortable with for money...maybe bone up on some Omaha here, though it is hardly like a live table, you would be better familiar with it anyway...Goodluck whatever you decide!!

Well, I'm not great at giving advise but I'd say remember the basics and hope for the 'high' hands. Play tight to last longer rather than trying for the turn and river hands... like you said the 'big' money is in the high hands promo instead of the traditional play... The basic 'advantage' with Omaha is that you have 4 cards (two extra) to make your hand with and the disadvantage is you HAVE TO use two of your whole cards to make that hand. From my experience the BIG hands are more frequent in Omaha (because of the two extra cards).
