WHEN DO YOU FOLD BIG SLICK?

When do you fold big slick? I see players weighing that had for their tournament life. In the railbird tourney today I am the dealer. Everyone folded to me and I go all in with A10 suited. Figure SB and BB would fold. Well low and behold SB calls for 1/3 of their chip stack with the hand of death AK offsuit. I am out kicked and praying for a miracle. Would you call an all-in with big slick for your tournament life? Just asking cause I would like to know how you decide to call with it. If the person is pushing all-in is a solid player then what hand do you put them on. I had a little over 3k and the caller had 9k. No other money in the pot but the blinds and the ante. Is that pot odds to call in the SB? Not complaining about the lose just want some insight on what other players think of this hand. I find that I will raise or push with big slick, but not call more than a all-in that is small. I weigh the amount of the all-in vs my chip stack. The player that called me is a solid player. So maybe they thought I was stilling the blinds. AA no over card, KK one over card and QQ two overs, but still behind. Let me know if my push with only two to act was wrong and I will come back and let you know the rest of the story. X

YESTERDAY 2 PEOPLE WENT ALL IN BEFORE ME AND I LAID DOWN ACE KING(I WOULD HAVE WON THE POT) THEN SAME GAME LATER GOT ACE KING AGAIN AND 1 PLAYER WENT ALL IN AND I CALLED THEY HAD ACE Q, AND YES THEY FLOPPED TWO MORE QUEENS.....LOL. IT'S A JUDGEMENT CALL!
GOOD LUCK X !

I have no confidence in AK what so ever. I will limp-in if I can, or possably call a 3XBB bet, but I will fold it upon a bet if I miss the flop. The only exception is if I am short stacked (less than 5XBB or real close to it). I have missed hitting Big Slick so many times that it's not funny, and any pair kicks your fanny.

Take care and good luck.

well, you have tiny slight odds in your favor with being suited (very minimal of course) you have 3 outs the 10's, he has 3 outs the K's(with his being higher - obviously) other than high card the odds going in are pretty lose to the same with the high card win going to the opponent- of course, if nobody hits the 10 or K.

If I was the opponent, i would very probably call your bet - it's only 1/3 of my stack and potentially the chance to knock out another opponent and increase my stack by 1/3. Plus,if you're betting all-in to protect a small or medium pair and you're playing against an opponent who plays as well as I know you do, then I might expect such a bet also and if you're betting with a pair of Queens or less then I would have 6 outs. all things I'd try to consider. That's about as close I can come to my answer - for what value it may prove to be.!

Very good question! - challenging!

Good luck on the tables! Railbirds card: Kh

I fold on the flop alot.....

If I've got the opponent covered, I'll rarely lay AK down. If I'm facing an all-in after a series of raises/reraises by multiple opponents, though, I have to seriously consider letting it go -- chances are, somebody's got a big pair and it's not worth risking my tournament against that plus other draws.

you against me? rest folded? sure i call. but there are plenty of reasons i have folded big slick, sometimes regretting it afterwards sometimes it proved to be the best thing i had done. Same go's for about any hand i think. After all, before the flop, ANY card is a live card
PookieGirl2 Nov 7, 2008 11:23 pm
Generally if it goes limp-limp-shove I call with AK. If it goes raise-re-raise-shove you are best letting it go. I always prefer to PUSH than CALL with AK anyhow. I'd rather be the aggressor than the caller with AK.
DeltaQ Nov 7, 2008 11:26 pm
I would... in attempt to double up with VERYshort stack...
If I see a push from small stack and I have AK then I will call also... just because you are short and figure you may be playing a mediocre hand... also, since you are late I figure you are playing a mediocre hand... even if you have a medium stack.
If it is early... 1/3 my chips is not much...
if it is early many play Ace trash... and AK is dominant...

I'm not close to good... but, a hand like AK is good to play... most especially one on one...

Best wishes & Luck

Great answers from the masters of poker. LOL. Well I should have folded and let the SB and BB battle. 27 places paid in todays tourney and I was in 26 place. Dumb move on my part. I could not have lasted long with 3k and the blinds where going to be $500/$1000 so I pushed hoping to pick off the blinds. With BB and SB only having 3x my stack I felt they would fold. X

I will lay it down early in tourneys if pressured preflop and if I miss, fold it post flop. Mid tourney and if not short stacked, will call normal raises to see the flop, but wont chase an A or K and fold. If I notice a good player or even a fair player raising from the button often, will call an all in if I have more chips and sometimes when I dont, but can put them on at least a range of hands. I will fold them late in tourneys if pressured to get past the bubble. After the bubble they are gold, and are treated as such.

my play on big slick vs. any random hand is about position and opponent...most of the time, AK vs. random is always a race...being on the wrong end of small poket pairs many times, I would prefer to have the AK in a race situation.....if you hit, you double up...I believe you made the right call...you had position and a pretty solid hand for a race...

If it isn't your day, you fold. I am always play aggressive with big slick and i like pushing all in with it. Recently, I have always won against high pocket pairs but against lower pocket pairs I have lost...It is all about making the right decision and when to make it. It is not always going to win but there is a good chance big slick has the advantage.
djgeter Nov 10, 2008 12:32 am

How big are the blinds? if its 500/1000, you are desparate. moving in with most face cards depending on action to you, is your only play. your opponent also only has >10 BB, so AK is as much a monster as your AT. In this case i think you are both correct.

If the blinds are a lot lower like 120/240, there is no need to go all-in. A raise of 5bb or less if you know your opponent would fold to it will do for a steal(you are still drawing). This would let you know where you are in the hand, if you get rr you know you are up vs. a possibly bigger hand. You would have been better to get it all-in w AK, but a raise to know where you are at is good with that hand too. Are you saying you are percieved as being a solid player? Or is that your read on your opponent?

good post...dj

djgeter Nov 10, 2008 12:38 am

guess i should have read all the posts before i commented. It was a good play on your part. You don't have much folding equity. Y ou just have to know in those situations, most players are doing the same, so you have to expect to get called by a hand as big or better than your own.

Chalk that one up to bad timing.

i personally would call 1/3 of my stack with ak off-suit. i would also push all-in with less than 10 big blinds
bigword Nov 10, 2008 12:52 am
just lost to A-K with my Q-Q. put his tourny life at stake. oh well, everyone is different i guess.
BigButt Nov 10, 2008 1:01 am

all in a10? you must be mad at best. Besides you left out alot of information to really make a conclusion to this story. What you precieve as solid play on your part might look like a fish to others at the table, thus table image tarnished for the blind player.

Just trying to be real with you, not hurt you. Sometime we need to really take a good close look at ourselfs and point out those flaws and change the laws to govern ones self.

I will lay down AK when I get two ALL INs in front of me always.
