a similar thing happened to me yesterday.

god knows why people do it but its sure annoying!!!!

akaCLINT Nov 5, 2008 1:09 pm

Bad play preflop from you..., even worse the bet on the turn with noting.

imo: he had every right to... if he thought you were trying to bluff him out of the hand...

but hey, i am a donkey ...

I would say why not! This is played very very poorly. A min-raise and you simply call with AK suited while your only @ 15-30 blinds? Your villain only had to call 30 to win a potential pot of 180, a call i wouldve made with all cards (even 72)

The flop. He hits his jack. He puts out a probe bet to see where hes at. He does get reraised (@ this point i wouldve folded the J2) He does play on though (good read?) You on the other hand shouldve been LONG GONE!

Mr villain recognizes doesnt want to get reraised so he plays it safe for the rest, he checks it to you, where you put out a bet of 1000 in a pot of 990. Not something i wouldve done (for less you couldve more easily found where u were @) He thinks about it for a while and (correctly) reads your bluff and calls, and wins the hand. Also not something i wouldve done but he was right. Your bet was to big to be somewhat credible.

So next time, try to reraise preflop with AK in these situations to weed out the limpers. Especially since you were only playing 6 handed your very likely to have the best hand preflop. Furthermore, if you dont want to make a big pot with your AK by preflop reraising, then there is no point in calling 270 in a 180 pot either to chase your AK down. If you wouldve made a big pot preflop then you couldve seen a turn card there, but with almost nothing invested and a bet and a reraise in front of you, then you gotta know when to fold a hand.

Please do understand, this is constructive critisism, i hope you learn something from this.

This is a rule that I like to go by in this situation:

Any player can play any two cards at any time

Just because I might not play the hand this way doesn't mean someone else won't either. Rather than ask why someone else played the way they did, I ask myself how I could have played the hand better. By focusing on my own mistakes I hope to learn from them and become a better player.

If I had been dealt this hand I would have raised to 90 preflop to try and get rid of weak hands such as your opponents. On the flop with no pair and no draw it's time to get rid of the hand when someone raises it.

Just my opinion, hope it helps.

you made a mistake on the pre-flop betting. you are just calling. trying to slow play? trying to trap someone w/ just A high drawing hand?? On the flop as well. you hit nothing & you just kept playing... that was your mistake, just my opinion (no offence).

here is the good example of Overplayed AK after the flop. AK is very strong hand to start, but if no hit after the flop, it is just an A high drawing hand.... a pair of deuces can beat it easily. it is not a SUPER hand. Just an A HIGH hand.

I didn't mean that Mr. Pre-flop played well tho. he was on the BB & call 30 to win 135 (SB's 15, BB's 30, your 30, fingers_maloyd's 60). more than 4:1 to call. that sounds totally fine to me even tho he had J2s. I would give a shot w/ that odds. But if you re-raised afterwords, i would fold then. After the flop, he actually played bad tho, it worked for him.

IMO, I would raise at the first oppotunity w/ AK instead of just calling, then calling someone's raise. if nothing hit on the board, I consider folding if someone bets out. If I feel some weakness from the other players, I might stab & try to steal the pot. if get a caller, i would fold soon if my hand doesn't develop.

AK is a good starting hand to raise before the flop, but if you don't hit the flop it don't beat anything but AQ so most of the time I would dump Big Slick if I don't hit the flop. It is a hand that has gotten me in trouble alot of the time. People play any cards so you have to be careful good luck!
BlueBomber88 Nov 5, 2008 2:28 pm
okay, why did you call the re-raise on the flop with just AK? He could have ANYTHING at that point. AJ, 33s, A8, etc. You got too frisky with your AK... but he didn't call with J2, he raised it... oh well. It's poker, I guess.
redsox62axe Nov 5, 2008 2:50 pm

Im sorry to be so blunt but you played this very poorly...You were UTG so in my opinion you needed to come out of the gate with a bet 5 or 6 x the bb...your limping showed weakness. After the flop I woulda mucked em as you didnt hit anything..especially cuz it looks like it was pretty early in the tourny...Please dont take this as me bashing you, I've made this type of mistake before. Live and learn...Peace

supersharpe Nov 5, 2008 2:55 pm
You played your hand wrong and got spanked for it so learn....................
ButtonDog Nov 5, 2008 4:44 pm
Who in their right mind would call that raise on the flop while holding AK even if it is suited and has an outside shot for runner runner flush.
