Beutiful Day

Nov 5, 2008 5:24 am Report Abuse

This title may be misleading, some will just dismiss what I have to say because they read the title and think I’m going to go on about the person that won this election. But if you are not narrow minded please read on. This has nothing to do with either candidate, I’m simply talking about the process in general.

At times we all get jaded with the election. We are all critical of the process, complaining that about the pandering, slander, and fear based tactics of both sides. Some have even said that the system prays on the uneducated, there is a big difference between uneducated and stupid, and I myself have to agree that most Americans are unwilling to dig deeper in order to discover the difference between truth -half truth- and flat out lies. Many are also critical of the electoral collage system--some stating that one vote doesn’t truly equal one vote and its hard to argue when you look at the recent out comes and see that the candidate that wins the over all majority of votes still does not win the election. Also there is no denying that if you are a Obama supporter living in a red state, take Arizona for example, your one vote will not translate or be enough to deny McCain the Electoral votes of that state. And conversely if you are a McCain supporter living in a blue state , take the example of California, the same applies and even though California is a little more diverse than Arizona in its population it is consistently voting Democratic so your McCain vote once again is lost in the flood of Obama supporters and the states electoral votes will go to Obama. I’m sure there are many other flaws in the system that I’m overlooking , there is no denying the process is not perfect it can and should be adjusted to fit today’s society .

With all that being said I would like to say what a beautiful day we just experienced!! I’m not talking about the historical aspect of this election (there is no over looking that also). I am instead talking about the democratic system in general and how wonderful it really is. No matter how you feel about the outcome of the election you have to appreciate what we just accomplished. Take a step back from your political views for just one second and think about what happened. We had a safe civil change of power and many nations in the world do not enjoy that same privilege. I mean no one was arrested or killed for there political affiliation or views, there were no riots in the street, no conflict (War), there was no military marching down the street in order to prop up the new leader. Instead we as a democratic nation lead by example showing we can have civil discourse with out civil war.
