Hitler's Picture

Nov 3, 2008 8:59 am Report Abuse

My dad was born in 1919 at the age of 17 he enlisted in the Australian Army which meant he had to lie about his age, in May 1941 on the island of Sicily he was capture by the Nazis and sent to Stalag 13 there he was held for over 3 years as a POW.
I grew up listening to his stories and one was Hitler's picture, it seems he found a picture of Hitler and of course Hitter's picture was everywhere except one place, the latrine and I can't remember where about's he put the picture in the latrine but I guess the Nazis didn't like it, and when asked why he did it my dad said in his own colorful way ....Well I see his picture everywhere so why not in the place he should be! My dad spent some time in the box for that and he and the box got to know each other very well. My dad might of been just a soldier but he gave them hell, he escaped from the camp 10 times and was recaptured 9 times. The last time was successful because the allies were bombing the camp at the time but that's another story.

My father was a founder member of the elite S.A.S ( Special Air Services) also a special adviser to the USA in Vietnam.
Decorations and Medals
1939/45 Star, Africa Star, Defence Medal, War Medal, Australian Service Medal, Vietnam Medal, Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Vietnamese Campaign Medal, Emblem of the Meritorious Unit Commendation, Unit Citation of the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Palm.

My dad died on the 11th of September 1996 about 1am in morning and is sadly missed, I was always his little girl and I know where ever he is his looking down on me.

I am so sorry for your loss Gwen. My dad, also a WWII veteran, died on Labor Day so I know your pain. They are resting now and in a better place.

Well done Sharon, Stan would be proud of you! And for all of you reading this blog you should see it as a sad blog it is just a lady I am proud of expressing how great a man her father really was! Stan was and will always be one of the greatest friends and men that I have been blessed to have known! He would rather you celebrate the lives of him and all the other great ones that risked all for the rest of us! And most of all he was a man who loved life and he would be happy knowing that we all do as well! Once again gwen BLOODY WELL DONE!
