Horrible Call

Oct 30, 2008 1:22 am Report Abuse

I was playing in a sit and go with 90 ppl and early in someone raised preflop and i called with jq offsuit. Flop came 2q7 and i checked. Raiser bets and i reraise all in. He waits until his bank goes down before calling with A9.. It was early in the tourney, we had the same amount of chips and he calls with ace high and no possible draws and rivers an ace to knock me out.. Would anyone make that call lol?

i dont know if i would of reraised him all in after he raised you. but i wouldnt of called you if i was him. There is always goin to be donks out there that will call with anything and end up sucking out on you.

i would have called his bet. no reraise all in and value bet the turn card maybe he would have called maybe he wouldnt have just some food for thought next time. if i had been u id have known he had ace. online players think aces are god sent cards. then a donk like me came along...... cracked em like ihop

He's obviously an idiot who watches too much poker on TV.

No intelligent guy would stack off with A9 in that spot early in the tournament.

Good ol' online poker rewarding the idiots yet again.

His call was bad, but a little advice fold j q in the spot facing a raise it's the type of hand where you will get into a lot of trouble with Good luck!

Of course, most of the people I play against make calls like that. I was in a 2700 player freeroll last night, got down to 88 players. I have QJos, the BB to my right had A8os. Flop comes 28J. I push all-in with my last 10K. BB calls 33% of his stack with 8s. Turn: A. River: Q. His 2 pair beats mine and it's all over.

In analyzing that hand, I thought about going all-in pre-flop, but decided to hedge my bet. But knowing what I know now, even if I had pushed pre-flop, there's no way he doesn't call. 88 players left and he's donking off 33% of his stack. Getting <2:1 on his 3:1 draw.

Some people are just determined to play their hand no matter what. You can't do anything to stop them. He had me out-chipped 3:1, but was that worth possibly doubling me up and giving me a 3:2 advantage for future hands? To him, it was.

In answer to your question, yes. It was a bad call. But early in micro stakes tournaments I find most people will do anything just to try and double up or move on to the next tourney. They want to build a big stack without doing the work. Then they try to bully the rest of players with their stack. But I'd have to agree with everyone else and say that pushing there was a bad idea. Your hand wasn't that solid that it couldn't be beaten. I would have been more likely to push if I had 2 pair or a set. For me, that's too early to risk it all with only a pair.

To clarify: I was that SS at the table with only 13K in chips. Blinds were 1500/3000. I didn't have too much time left and that was one of the better hands I'd seen in a while.
MisterLongFace Oct 30, 2008 2:15 am
your question is "would anyone make that call?" well that guy you were playing against would and that means other people would too. of course its a horrible call but i have seen many calls that are actually worse than that one.
JAG_USMC Oct 30, 2008 2:21 am
OK, you called a preflop raise. Then you flop top pair and check to the raiser. He bets and you come over the top with an all-in bet.... Hmmmmm..... Sure you had top pair, but the best hand you could have reasonably come up with would be trips or two pair. He raised preflop then bet on the flop, it is reasonable to assume he has SOMETHING. The all-in raise in this situation smells of bluff to me, I probably would have called it with an Ace too. However, I wouldn't have raised with the Ace to begin with.... Just my opinion.
ButtonDog Oct 30, 2008 2:22 am
I would have folded pre flop and would not have gone all in on the flop. A continuation bet maybe, but not all in.
sohail Oct 30, 2008 2:28 am
Why would you smooth call a raise preflop with a hand like JQ os? Low limit players do not have enough poker sense to fold A-rags. I think you chose the wrong place to play that hand. I think it's a mistake to go all-in with the top pair early in a tournament. Play poker, and if you lose the pot, well hopefully you'll lose a small pot.
