Nautical Disaster

Nautical Disaster

I had this dream where I relished the fray
and the screaming filled my head all day.
It was as though I'd been spit here, settled in, into the pocket
of a lighthouse on some rocky socket
off the coast of France, dear.

One afternoon 4000 men died in the water here
and 500 more were thrashing madly
as parasites might in your blood.

Now I was in a lifeboat designed for 10.
Ten only. Anything that systematic would get you hated.
It's not a deal nor a test nor a love of something fated.

The selection was quick. The crew was picked
in order, and those left in the water
were kicked off our pantlegs
and we headed for home.

Then the dream ends when the phone rings.
You're doing alright. He said it's out there most days and nights
but only a fool would complain.
Anyway, Susan, if you like,
our conversation is as faint a sound in my memory
as those fingernails scratching on my hull.

The Tragically Hip, from the album Day For Night.

I posted this because I LOVE this song. It has soooooo much meaning
to me. Others can read into it what they want, but the imagery is so powerful.

This band is one of Canada's Greatest Treasures. Unfortunately, except for a
few border states they remain virtually unknown. But I'll tell you this... if you get
to listening to them, you'll know why we love 'em so much.

I like locked in the trunk of a car. I saw them in Seattle fro the purpose of a small venue with affordable tickets. Even though I am Canadian, I will travel south of the border to see them.

are they still together? I love their sound. It's soo early 90's, thx for introducing me to them.

I agree Osp... I have seen them twice, once in Thunder Bay (3 hrs. drive west) and once in Sault Ste. Marie (4 hour drive east).
And Dtown, they are very much together having just put out their latest CD, "World Container" If you want a better idea of their range, this link will give you their page on YouTube. It's got songs from the first CD (Small Town Bringdown) to the latest (Yer Not The Ocean). My faves on these pages are "Poets", "Grace, Too", "The Darkest One (video with the Trailer Park Boys... another of Canada's Gems largely unknown to the outside world)", and .. heck... they ALL great. Listen to 'em loud, and over and over...
