Question
QUESTION: hi Dewey, thanks again for the last answer , and here i am with another odd fight situation...I've read that golden eagles eventually attack wolves! how come and wouldn't a wolf be too much of a prey for an eagle? heavy and aggressive as they are ,representing the top of canine predators, would a wolf allow being killed by a bird?
ANSWER: Hi, Fernando!
It is true! A golden eagle has enough strength to capture and kill a grown up wolf weighing ten times as much as itself. How is this possible? Well, eagles are formidable even for raptor standars; the strenght on their long, lethal talons is superior to that of a grown up man!
The eagle can use these weapons with enormous skill.
A wolf is a quite big and strong animal but it has a big disadvantage; its only weapon is its mouth. Its legs are made to walk and run, not fighting.
When an eagle attacks a wolf, it usually holds its back with one talon; the wolf turns around to bite, but the eagle then grabs the wolf's muzzle with the other talon, holding it close with little effort. This renders the wolf defenseless.
There have been some reports of eagles attacking wolves in the wild, but usually this kind of face off is "organized" by man; some tribes in Mongolia and nearby countries use eagles to hunt wolves, training them to specially chase these predators.
Normally, an eagle will attack smaller prey, like hare, large birds and deer or mountain goat calves. They have also been known to attack sheep.
Now imagine what a Haast's eagle would be able to kill! This enormous eagle was the largest known to date, it had claws longer than those of a grizzly bear, and it went extinct quite recently! It is said that the first people who arrived to New Zealand (only place in the world where the Haast eagle lived) sometimes became prey to it! Which shouldn´t be surprising because Haast eagles usually ate large bipedal prey such as the moas, some of the largest birds ever to exist.
Best regards
Dewey
