Having an argument on Absolute poker with a bloke.

He insists that there is no difference between a set and trips.

I told him they are the two ways of hitting three of a kind, but they are not the same thing. ie you havent got trips if you havent got a pocket pair.

He is adamant I am wrong and that if you have a pocket pair and hit on the board then you still have trips. He wont accept that hes wrong.

Sorry that should say, you havent got a set if you dont have a pocket pair and it hits on the board.

Set - pocket pair plus 1 on the board

trips - one in your hand and 2 on the board

according to everthing I''ve read - to date - a set is three cards of the same value how you arrive at those three cards isn't relevant. At least Ihaven't run into anything, yet, tha says there is any difference between a set and trips. Except trips is a much older term.

So is frogeyes, hooks, cowboys and a bunch of others. lol

Good luck on the tables! Railbirds card: Kh

Silly argument to get upset about. They are both three of a kind.

There is also a third way. There can be three on the board.

Yes there are three ways of having three of a kind.

But a set and trips are two different ways of getting them. Which is what I tried to tell him. He says if you have a pocket pair and hit a third on the board you still have trips, and if you have one in your hand and hit two on the board then you still have a set.

Definition: A 'Set' is another term for three of a kind. In Texas Hold'em, it usually means a player's pocket pair has matched a card on the board to make the three of a kind.
Also Known As: trips, three of a kind

Trips and set are NOT the same thing. They are different ways of getting three of a kind

Markie141 Oct 16, 2008 4:30 pm

A set is hidden .http://www.conjelco.com/pokglossary.html

meaning you have a pocket pair and flop another one ,

trips are 3 of a kind and can be arrived at however you like

but it's obvioulsy better to have a set since 2 are hidden you

be able to get more money out it , it's a small distinction

though so not all players may be aware of it , gl !

I have had the same stupid arguement with ppl, even though they have the same value, I agree that a set is when you have a pair in your hand and hit the third, hence a set, and trips is when you have one in your hand and two on the board...

If I put my pants on both legs at once instead of one at a time they are still pants, they don't all the sudden turn into britches and nothing else

Naminuk Oct 16, 2008 4:38 pm
Same think, set = 3 of a kind
akaCLINT Oct 16, 2008 4:40 pm

See. It does cause debates..

mora19_66 Oct 16, 2008 4:45 pm
big difference set or trips, read up markie's comment
PokerRoman1 Oct 16, 2008 4:48 pm
i agree with you Fc! a set (pair in hand + 1 on board) is a far better hand because it offers more value! more advanced players think about what the ohter guy has...the theory of poker!
BAT357 Oct 16, 2008 4:49 pm
i dont hear players say, so, you hit your trips???? a set, to me is, "rolled up" trips...different from the obvious trips! just the way I use the term! technically I guess, in the end, you still have three of the same card! the hands they beat are the same! and the hands they lose to as well!

suppose we could argue which pocket pair are prettier Ac As or Ah Ad
larry1dart Oct 16, 2008 5:31 pm
One really has to look at the origin of the use of the word here in order to see what it means. I'm just guessing, but I think a set is a pocket pair that hits the board to make 3 of a kind, which allows you to "set" a trap on someone. Just a guess but it makes sense to me. And it really does matter, as it would be easier to get other peoples chips with a PP then to have two hit the board for trips. Poker vernacular is abused and misused so much it really isn't so important except when writing about it and reading it. GL!!
