Heads up - What to do?

Oct 16, 2008 4:40 am Report Abuse

Hello Poker players from every kind of felts. This blog is about head up strategy. Id like to hear from all of you on if you agree with me or disagree or whatnot. Help me improve my game!.

When I play heads up I tend to play it very differently than I would play a 9 sng, a tourney, and any other kind of tournies. I tend to become very aggresive since you are posting blinds every time. I tend to mess with my poker chips that i have on my desk while playing heads up online to help me think if its going to be a good call or not. Few things i need keep in mind - its easy to become short stacked, read the other's guy plays, and some other things.

Ive also learned in long run that calling suits and connectors really does benefit your poker game little bit more than just calling with AK, KQ, JA and etc. Call me a donkey - but Ive seen pros do it all of the time.

When playing poker, heads up, any tournies or anything, you need to be expected to sit for a while, maybe an hour to 5 or 6 hours. Poker is NOT a 15 mins game unless playing all in or nothing.

Other last important thing to remember when you are playing heads up, Its a 5 card game, so if you think you've won preflop - maybe you should check and check again to River and see if you've still won game, then go for it!

When in doubts - FOLD! Your guts are usally right.

Win some for me! Railbirds card: AdRailbirds card: AhRailbirds card: AcRailbirds card: As

Railbirds card: AdRailbirds card: AhRailbirds card: AcRailbirds card: AsHey ok I can uderstamd, but when playing heads up you have to change your way of playing or the antes will eat up your stack, you figure by the time you get to heads up they are all ready high. but you can not wait for that perfect hand like AA KK etc: play aggresive. for me I know I have gone into tourneys & realize oh my I have only a hour or 2 then I have to leave. I have blown more money, & now I do not play unless I am rested & I can play all day. no phone calls, or any company. so I have had to change my method of playing. No more rushing it no matter how long or tired I am. I am now playing to win! Good luck on & off the felt!

It takes a while to get to heads up in a tournament, but I like to finish it quickly as possiable when I get there ! It is my intention, no matter who has the larger stack, to be the aggressor ! Like you say, you cant sit there and wait on good starting hands !

I will raise with any card in the paint, any two cards of the same suit, suited connectors, literally anything that has pontential to make a hand ! One thing to remember, most of the time, neither of you have a hand, and the one controling the action is the one who gets the chips !

When your opponent comes back over you, it is ok to fold if you don't have a good draw, or a decent starting hand pre flop, just play on your terms, not his ! Heads up isn't as much about the cards as it is outplaying your opponent !

....play on ...Tc....

my headsupgames duration is usualy not longer than 20 minutes because its all about aggression. you mentioned suits and connectors. indeed -at least its my style to play- i raise for regular especially the weaker hands because you get them more often than strong hands. your opponent doesnt get better hands and my experience is that he will fold often enough so that you can build a nice stack if you are aggressive enough which means for me to go -when in doubt- allin. trust me...your opponent may have hit on the flop but most people fold when you reraise a mediocre pot to allin. crucial is the beginning of each headsup because there you have to build your image. playing tight, ultratight while the blinds are low and your opponent will fear your raises! dont worrie about it that he will lead after the first 15 hands with 300 or more chips...you can strike back when the blinds are more worth than 15/30

I like to play aggressive changing the hands i raise with even raising garbage if they play back i throw away, try to play small pots off the start to feel out the opponent I aggressively bet draws as I know opponent won't hit very often try and get them off hand, I always try to get guys off hands by switching up where I bet and I rarely call, always trying to raise or fold

I play tight against aggresive players and trap, and loose against timid players,

Hey Bud,

I think that u have a grasp on your style of HU play, but I would find it hard to comment or help you improve your play, just on what u have said here.

Although I would love to play with u anytime or observe your HU match sometime and we could discuss some things

Let me know

Take care, M

What has helped me the most is playing on FullTilt under their $2 heads up games - I've played hundreds of them and feel very confident when I get to a MTT final table - If I get heads up then I'm in a familar place - Nothing worst than being good at MTT only to lose because your Heads-Up game is not where it needs to be.

Yes, you have to be agressive - if they check - place a bet - if they call then they may have connected or on a draw - if not, they will usually fold and the hand is yours. What I have found is that both plays miss hitting the flop more than they hit so being the first one to bet usually wins the pot.
