I just play cards

Oct 11, 2008 11:08 pm Report Abuse

Playing last night in a private game, I asked these questions and was very surprised by the answers from many of the players. I asked how many of them really figure out how many outs they need to hit that straight or flush or full house. And I also asked how many of them know the pot odds.

This final question was asked because I just cannot believe that everyone at the table is inspiring to be a poker pro. I asked how many just play cards, like the Friday or Saturday night game’s we play at our friend’s house. You know the kind were everyone is having fun, drinking a few beer getting a little loud. The good old fashion home game.

I asked these questions because it seems there are so many people that have comments about everyone else’s play. Well to my surprise 8 out of 9 said that they don’t know how many outs to hit that Straight , Flush., Full house and even less knew pot odds.

It seem that calling someone a DONK or saying nice CATCH is just not knowing how to lose with a little class . Last time I played cards each player got seven cards, some you share and some you do not. It is not over until the last card is dealt.

My style of play is good old fashion cards. I am not an inspiring poker pro just someone who likes to play cards. On line poker has given many others and me the chance to play whenever we want. I have made many friends on the different poker forums and can find a FRIENDLY game any night of the week. My style of play got me to two final tables last night that adds up to cash and a ticket to a second round. Not bad for a DONK or someone who made a NICE CATCH.

well played. Good job on the finishes last night. I don't pot odds very well. I do count my outs. But even so I ignore both of those when my gut says otherwise. Good blog

I also just play cards for the most part. I play different win I play friends than when I play in in the casinos. Your a GOOD PLAYER Kona don't let the so called PLAYERS make you play different. You have handed me butt many times and taken all my chips more than once. You just keep doing what your doing. Very Good Blog

nice blog

this is very true, sometimes i count outs but rarely factor in pot odds.

sometimes you just get that feeling that they are bluffing, and you have to go withy our gut. While the math plays a part in it, its certainly not always the best way to play, after all, you are just guessing based on probabilities. What you know abouty a persons play can be more important then any percentage.

tony17 this comment is so true " What you know abouty a persons play can be more important then any percentage." This is way I enjoy play private games more than the MTT

kona ignore them most who say that stuff like that are idiots and i should know i have done it a few times

you are a very good player and you seem to play me like a guitar

i tend to use it all then make a big mistake and bust but thats just me i wanted 2 learn about pot odds and the amount of outs i have because i am interested in improving my play i know i wont ever be as good as the pros but i can allways try

I see all the time when the players who are up on their game with all the figuring of hand %'s all the odds and the outs. Whereas in the long run these are proven statistics, the variable will still kick in, and usually at the worst time. I must say i admire players like that . I've tried to figure all this to be a better player but i'm not good at it and it hurts my game. So i figure im better off JUST PLAYING POKER. I dont aspire to be a pro , i just play for the fun and the friendships i aquire. Hopefully it doesnt cost me too much. So far my golf has cost me many times my worst losing streak. So all is good!

I pretty much just play also. I do have an idea of the number of outs i have...such as I need a K or 9 to make my straight, and i know that 2 kings and a 9 have already been shown in someone elses hand. But to say I know the odds of making the hand....no way. I wouldn't take the time to figure out the odds most of the time, even if i understood exactly how to do it. That's taking the game a little too serious for my liking. I either like my chances, or I don't. To me, it's more about having a good time.

Love of the game and constant learning...that's me. Thursday night in a live tourney, I go all in with AQs, two players call, BB goes in the tank giving us all his "Pot Odds" lecture.

He tells us all about the %'s and every book he has read. Finally, he folds. Oops, forgot two of us are all in at this point so we roll over. My AQ holds up knocking out the other player and tripling my chip count.

The "Pot Odds" master proceeds to re-lecture us that he should have called with his J5o. Yeah, right.

Sorry for the long post but thought you would get a kick out of the story.
Thanks for the great post.

Terry I too just fun. I do some pot odds stuff but then I also watch others play. Sometimes like some say you just either get that gut feeling that someone is bluffing or you can tell by the way they have been playing that they are.

Still haven't got a good hang of reading the guys that sit back and suck ya in tho. ( even tho I have done it a few times myself.) lol.

I play for the love of the game.

Most of the time relaxing , sometimes a total donk fest ( which irritates me) cause even tho I love the game I also play it seriously. ( not to say I haven't played a suck out hand a time or too and won it.

Right now have been having better luck on PS so thats where my bankroll is.

Soon going to concentrate more on FT to build one there. Esp. since most the private tourney's from rb's are their.

Keep up the awesome work and have a blast.

Because when it stops being fun thats when it's break time for me.

Kathy
