TAG vs. LAG

Oct 7, 2008 4:51 am Report Abuse

Here is the question?

Is there any playing style that always produces the highest return on investment?

I often play TAG, sometimes I play semi tight passive, and sometimes I play semi tight aggressive. I have been known to play an occasional had with a loose passive style. I rarely play LAG though.

Am I harming my opportunities by failing to take advantage of the frequent opportunities that the LAG player gets because the odds of hitting a flop are about 1 in 7. I often see players winning pots with hands like, K,3, J,7, or 9,6 suited. They push out of position and get called with A,K suited, or pocket pairs and still take down the pot? I also wonder about players who raise or call every hand and then raise post flop and end up takeing it down uncontested. There are other players who are only LAG'ers when they are in position. They bet with any two cards when on the Button, CO or HJ position. Then they C bet regardless of the flop. If you call, they will usually fire a second and then third bullet, so you better have a hand if you are going to see the river.

So, how do some people still play LAG and still do well in tournaments???

To learn more about the ins and outs of that style (too complicated to go into in a blog post) check out the Daniel Negreanu book Power Hold 'em Strategy. Daniel outlines the small ball strategy used by LAG players in about 200 pages (told ya it was too complicated to go into here).

lag is the most profitable if played correctly but also has the higher varience compared to tag

Actually, a good player knows when to switch up the game, and is capable of playing all styles. If you limit yourself to one style of play, then you are not using all the tools avaliable to do the job, of winning at poker !

....play on ...tc.....
