What is position.... It is the last to act in a round of betting.
It is also the most powerfull , money making seat in any game. Any player who does not understand position is missing out on a huge amount of unclaimed chips at any table they are sitting at. It is my feeling that unless you have strong reasons, you should ALWAYS bet position.
Position is poker 101, the first , most basic thing that you need to know and use.
I shake my head at players who do not take advantage of this most powerfull tool in poker. I want to scream at them... if your allergic to chips why are you playing. Even when I am in the pot, say in mid position with my missed J 10 suited that I smooth called with and missed the flop completely, when last position doesn't bet, and then the board pairs on the turn or a nothing card comes out and first position bets it ,I know they don't have it BUT they took advantage of what last position misplayed. I fold my hand and shake my head as last position follows suit and folds also. I want to type to them... they just stole your pot and you did nothing. Why o why would you not take chips that people have allowed you the opportunity to take. They put them out there and then waved the white flag by checking it to you and you just let them beautiful little chippies slip away. I have an excuse, I did not have position and I missed the flop.
So next time you have position, do me a favor, do poker a favor and for the love of pete, do yourself the justice of betting position. Otherwise just bend over, you allowed yourself to get screwed.
Peace and GL ... sees ya on da felts

DID THAT MAKE SENSE? OH WELL I AM SURE YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN.
I nominate "POSITION, use it or bend over" for best blog title ever !
Few people online will play the trap because they are afraid to do anything but make an over bet that scares everybody from the pot.
I know exactly what you mean Gcrafty... just like all things it is situational.
That in mind.. if you bet 1/2 pot as a position bet you only need to win 1out of 3 of those to break even. I will venture to say that you will win 2/3 bets playing positon.
Trapping is a tricky propostion and very situational too , I find about 1/2 the time I trap myself when attempting it so I usually dont, like str8 bluffing.
All I am saying here is if you have position and noboy raises or it is just called or checked to you, a 1/2 pot bet will win often enough to make it worth your while to make this little " leap of faith " and make a position bet. I wouldn't do it everytime you have position, as you will set up yourself for the trap, but once and awhile. It is another tool in your play arsenal that you can use to chip up a little, a tool that others are doing and yiour missing out on if you don't .
Peace, J
Mami, Mami, Mami... LMAO... That caught my attention too!!

I will say position is good play on line if you know what you are doing show a few good hands and when you have position and take one down rather a good hand you hold or not do not show no matter what. You want people to think you play position and on best hands .
If you give them time someone who reads alot of books will come to your table and try to run you over when in position and bang shove position where the sun does not shine.
Main thing is always observe while you play many actions people make in one night will repeat. But notes do no good because people always learn and try different things. All depends on mood and how the table action is.
Tournament play position does work much better later in the game.
