raising preflop?

Oct 2, 2008 9:47 pm Report Abuse

with all that new schoolpoker (also know as bingo) is rasing preflop still usefull? IMO you always get 4 or 5 callers when you raise preflop.....everybody wants to see a flop these days it doesnt matter what it will cost.....face rag hand, suited cards, connectors, even another medium hand......so my question is .....is raising preflop still have any use?

Early in a tournament, if you raise pre flop, you better be prepared to move it all in, because invariably some joker will push all in with a substandard hand ! Later in the tournament after the donkfest is over, then it is a good play, espically from a seat of position !

....play on ....Tc....

From the way u worded this, it sounds like ur one of the regulars at the 3/6 limit table, and no .. there is no point in doing anything in that game lol. But if that was inaccurate, and ur talkin about online poker, your probably raising too early in the tournament, if u just pick up little pots here and there, wait til the blinds are higher, ur 3x-4x raise will get a lot more respect. I agree with you top cat, but i resent the joker comment LOL.
It really does depend on the tournament and the buy in. Yes in any random freeroll your preflop raise is gonna get called by half the table and prob only one of them has a hand worth calling with. But to be honest in allot of the Private Railbird buy in tournaments i play in the players are "poker smart" and understand even early that they need not play those ragged hands.

In the on-line freerolls I generally don't raise preflop for the first half-dozen hands or so because of the all-in bingo players. I'll limp with anything playable and call the jokers if it's unfoldable. After those half-dozen hands, the bingoists will have either done their stackbuilding or busted out and things calm down a bit. Once that happens, you can start playing real poker.

Alot depends on position and the cards I've got.

Early doors if I pick up pocket pairs down to 9s then I will raise pre flop. The higher the pair the higher the raise.

I look at how many people are in the pot before I decide whether to limp. If I have suited connectors but there are 4-5 limpers then I fold..If I have pictures then I will flat call, but I wont call any raise with anything other than a pair.

Once the donks are out the way then I tend to loosen up in the middle stages and play suited connectors, even raising with them in late position.

I cant see the sense of raising pre flop with suited connectors in the early stages of a tournament because as mentioned, you will get 4-5 callers and in that situation you have to be extremely lucky to take down the pot because they will call you to the river with anything and with so many in the pot the chances are you will get screwed.

I guess it depends on the stakes that you are playing. I find that a min raise (1st to enter the pot) will eliminate almost all callers, including the BB.
Allowing you to go heads up most of the time.
