Did I play this bad?

Sep 18, 2008 6:16 pm Report Abuse

Well, i guess the answer would be yes as i got knocked out but here it goes. It a tournament style home game and blinds are up to 800 chips and i had about 16k in chips which was about average. 9 left and i got dealt AQ os in the BB. A guy in mid-position raised to 3000 chips. and I called leave just me and him in the hand. We had just merged tables so i did not know what type of player he was, but he had me covered.

(Should I have called with AQ?)

Flop comes Q,4,5

I bet 6k (the pot) and he instantly pushes all in. I call with my remaining 8k in chips.

He turns over KK

I'm no expert, but I would do it aswell. Maybe thats why I suck. :P

i'm no expert but i think a raise of 5 times the big blind would have me thinking hard about mucking it .... off suit would almost certainly get me off the hand ....

Been there. Done that. Got that T-shirt.....

this is just a cooler, imo. how far are you from cashing with nine left? if this was the first hand of the new table you might be able to make an argument to fold this preflop, esp since most nlhe players hate aqos, but if you don't call you prob don't get to see villians hand anyways so you get no information off him from a fold for the next time you play him...and you got a pretty safe flop for the aq, obv...only five hands really have you dominated...aa,kk, qq, 44, 55...i throw out a smaller size bet on the flop, pot bet really isn't a feeler bet right there, esp in consideration to your stack - about 45%...but that being said you're still able to lay this down after his shove and still have 7k left.

Well, It takes a stronger hand to call then to raise. If it was me I would have folded, seeing that I didnt have a read on him and I only had 800. Not worth the extra 2,200 to see a flop.

you bad luck sorry for you

I fold that hand pre without reads on opponent when he shoves the flop I would be thinking overpair though based on his preflop raise.

For me it's not a solution tu push all in. The contet yeah but what type of gammer isit? It' a important infomation of analysis.

Well how can anyone get off AQ when you flop top pair and you have half your stack in the pot. You just can't. You didn't know he had kings. What I like to do when I sit at a new table and I am not familiar with an opponent that has come into the pot and I am out of position with a vulnerable hand with an average stack is I would let it go and study the new table for a few hands to get a feel on how they play.

That wud be hard to not call, but if he insta-reraised all in i wud be very curious and start thinking long and hard if he picked up a pocket pair and just flopped a set.....with average chips at the table idk if i wud call and double him up real quick
stephenns Sep 18, 2008 7:38 pm
yeah, i already knew the answer i guess. I just played it badly. These were all pretty good players and even though i just got moved to same table with this person i should folded the AQ os preflop or atleast lay it down after the all in.

Tough to play it right when you don't know the player. I would say this is either a re-raise or a fold depending on your read. Let's say that you had re-raised him preflop to 6000. At that point, what would you put him on if he smooth calls? or Reraise you all-in? Well, if he re-raised you it's an obvious fold. But, if he smooth call what would you credit him with? Tough when you don't have read. So, I would say smooth calling here was a mistake, because you failed to get any information and stayed in the pot. IN a final table specially early on folding an A-Q from an early position may not be a bad choice. So, play position until you have enough information to make a better judgement.
