POKER QUIZ DISSENTING OPINION

Sep 7, 2008 9:58 pm Report Abuse

I usually ,as part of my daily ritual and in hopes of one day getting into the quiz tourney, do the daily poker quiz.

I don't always agree but usually do and get a lot of them right ( I might point out I get a lot more right than I did whenI first joined RB's so TY for improving my game ). Sometimes whenn I dont agree at first orget the question wrong I can see Quizmaster's thinking and, in the end, agree with it.

This week I strongly disagree with almost 1/2 of them as they are about positon, ie sitting down on the right or left of a certain player for a vareity of reasons. Let me point out an inherent flaw in the Quizmaster's thinking this week on that.

Always take the left most seat open in any game or tourney ( if allowed ). NO matter the ability of the player and particulary if more than one seat is open. In this way you are assured that the variables act before you do and give you time and thought to adjust your game to compensate.

On more than one occasion this week, Quizmaster has queried that the seat to the left AND right of a certain player is open and which do you take. He then went on to say that sometimes it is ok or good to take the seat on the right...... that is wrong. If I take the seat on the right, that means I allowed a player I would rather have act before me to move in on my left. So Even if the player on my immediate left is no threat, the seat next to him is available for someone to take that might be..... see my point.

Whereas if I always take the left most seat, I control as much as I am capable of controlling and that is how we make money at the tables, controlling what we can.

So all things being equal and some things not ALWAYS take the left most seat if possible.

Peace, J

please let me know the "left most position" in a circular poker table.

no matter where u sit there are the same number of people before you and after you, because it is a circle.

you need to pick and choose what type of player is to your direct left / direct right.

a tight player to your left is good because you can steal their blinds.
bigpoppaboats Sep 7, 2008 10:40 pm

draw a diagram bob of a circle with 9 spots around it.

Now imagine 2 are open on either side of a player ... which would be the left most spot???

Do I have to draw a diagram??

bigpoppaboats Sep 7, 2008 10:47 pm

here is a digram notice the circled seat...

you take that seat so unknowns and variables ie, new players coming in cant get position on you. What you cant steal the blinds of people on your right??? I dont see your point mystic bob?

You guys are hilarious,.. lol,.. I want good players on my right, tight players on my left and the unwashed masses in the middle,.. But!,.. there's always a but,.. do we have choice online?,.. I think not,.. Railbirds card: Qh

OK it is my opinion... it is what I was taught by one of the best players I ever played and i learned it way before I thought about online play. Always take the seat on the left and if it comes available move to the left so people come in on your right.

Nuff said

agrandkitten Sep 7, 2008 11:20 pm
good point , Rowanlea, you have no choice in an online game, only in live games, even then, until you start playing, you do not know how anyone plays. So, does this question even matter?
bigpoppaboats Sep 7, 2008 11:27 pm

If the table were an online cash table you WOULD have a choice about where you sit !!!

ALL online play is not just tourney play.

bigpoppaboats Sep 7, 2008 11:28 pm
AND if it did not matter... why did quizmaster spend this whole week on it??
topcat1954 Sep 7, 2008 11:28 pm

The button always travels clockwise at a poker table, therefore it will always have players to the left, and right of it. If there are two seats avaliable, or even more, it is always prudent to take the seat the furtherest in front of the button, or as is the case, as far to the LEFT of the button, as possiable !

The only time it might be wise to take the seat to the right, is if there is a known player directly to the left of the other seat, that you have trouble beating, and you, and him, both know it !

.....play on ....Tc.....

bigpoppa i totally agree with your whole blog and responces. I would always take the left most spot also!
mystic_bob Sep 8, 2008 12:23 am
it doesnt matter... you still have same # of people to the left as to the right at any point...

the quiz gave specific situations and in those situations it was better to sit to the right...

i dont think u understand the concept of a circle.
by the way thanks for your sarcastic comments in this blog but a much nicer approach in your PM. it really helps make friends.

I don't think the correct answer to any poker question can be

"always' do anything , the answer is usually it depends lol ,

there are certain players you want on your right in order to trap

them or to get out of their way lol,

but yes usually I want to be on the left and have position ,

but Rowan is right, online you get what you get lol , gl

bigpoppaboats Sep 8, 2008 12:36 am

My humblest apologies for the sarcasm Bob... uncalled for.

I stand by my point all questions this week involved had a seat open on the right and left of a player......I still think given this option it would be best to take the seat on the left as what you make in stealing blinds could be easily offset by a superior or jackal type player coming in on your left and stealing your blinds etc as you left that seat open.

larry1dart Sep 8, 2008 12:45 am
All I know is my butt hurts from all the sitting we had to do!! GL!!
thebigeasy59 Sep 8, 2008 1:02 am
wtf. if you can somehow hold on to the button and have position all day long then please show me how to do it. otherwise, whoever told you that is either on drugs or not good at explaining things.
bigpoppaboats Sep 8, 2008 2:51 am

OK I am apparently not explaining my self very well, not that I expect everyone to agree but I can do better with more graphics and here they are...

IN this weeks quiz's it was to take the left seat or right seat of a player when coming to a table. Left seat is marked with red A and right is marked with a blue B.

My point is...... if you take seat B for ANY reason you leave the option of someone sitting in seat A that you would have really liked to act after. You have given up control of that when you could have controlled it. Not smart !!

Railbird image uploaded: Sep 7, 2008 7:39 pm

Again you CAN choose the seat that you take in cash games which is what quiz master was talking about and what I am talking about.

It is always better to have the unkown variables on your RIGHT as much as possible so you can decide what to do in relation to it.

All of you saying you have not control are not even paying attention to the basis of this or the daily poker quiz that it was based on.

thebigeasy59 Sep 8, 2008 4:01 am
I understand now I think. That being said, if you're sitting in at a cash game then everybody is unknown unless you want to sit and lurk for 20 minutes. I'd way rather have position on a bigger stack than on an empty seat.
mystic_bob Sep 8, 2008 5:31 am
id rather let an unknown act before me and have a tight player act after me than have an unknown player act after me and a tight player before me because i wont be able to steal the blinds of the tight player if i sit to his left, which is what you are encouraging to do "if at all possible".

that is exactly what the quiz was asking.

RockchalkBaby Sep 8, 2008 7:06 am

Planning

YES, POPPA, THE LEFT, ALWAYS THE LEFT. SOMETIMES IT JUST DOESN'T PAY TO TRY TO HELP PEOPLE. THEY CAN'T BE HELPED. THOSE ARE THE PEOPLE I WANT ON MY RIGHT!! I AM ROFLMAO! ROCK ON!!!

riverqueen1972 Sep 8, 2008 7:16 am

I dont give a crap what seat I take, a long as its the one that gets dealt the best hand every friggin' time.

~~~peace~~~
