NEED ADVICE: AQ off suit

Sep 5, 2008 11:10 pm Report Abuse

I know i should buy a book, and I am working on it
i have almost 2000 F.P.P. poker stars
I can wait a bit longer

NEED QUICK ADVICE:
1) my play is tight ( I can change it up if need be)
2) M.T.T. $8.80 buy in

I already folded but I still would like advice here
for next time. We all know it will happen again

When ones play is considered to be playing "tight"
should they be folding hands like : A Q off suit ,
to a raise of 5 x b.b. even when the blinds are 10/20
when raised from 4rd seat
you are sitting 6th of 9 total

i know i will see the situation happen again
and i could see my self wanting to play.
But since the blinds are so low my brain tells me
"no you have time and chips wait for a better spot"
then i fold and watch....
Is there a way to win this hand post flop
is A Q off suit worth it here
my gut says you can win if you play it just right
what would the right play be
if i wanted to try to win hand post flop
raise 1x or 1.5x or more? call?
I hope this question makes sense

thank you, for any good advice

Well I don't know about the "good advice" part. I won't call or re-raise a 5XBB raise with A/Qos unless I place that player as a real loose cannon. I feel you can get your money in better by waiting. I will however play that hand as a limper looking for the set, or a str8 / flush draw if the price stays ok.

Take care and good luck.

i fold sometimes AQ without payin the blind. it depends on the tourney, but...you get often enough in serious troubles when you play AQ.

when you raise some blinds in early stages you get calls even from AK. then you hit the ace and mostly the pot increases dramatically, and the possability that you lose a damned high amount of your chips is imminent.

i made no stats about it , but i guess overall i have lost a lot more chips with AQ then i won. this changed only since i play it like pockettens..
that means...if there is a geater raise from a TAG i fold AQ of course even when i have hit the ace. there are better chances with em. if the board doesnt show higher cards than a Queen you have good chances to win the pot as long as the opponents dont have Toppair Topkicker...

therefore, to answer your question hesays: indeed has AQ its chances, but its highly recommended to dont overrate (and overplay) it, especially postflop.

YOU DID THE CORRECT THING BY FOLDING AQ UNSUITED.......ESPECIALLY WHEN THERE ARE 5X BETS AND CALLS BEFOR YOU.....................ONE EXPERT SAYS TO FOLD THAT TYPE OF CARDS IF THERE IS A BIG RAIS/RAISES BEFOR YOU.

THINK ABOUT IT....AQ UNSUITED IS ASKING FOR TROUBLE. ESPECIALLY WHEN THERE IS A BIGGER THAN AVERAGE RAISE IN EARLY POSITION., AS THAT BETTER IS TELLING YOU THAT HE DOES NOT CARE IF YOU HAVE EXCELLENT PLAYING CARDS.....HE HAS HIS.........................WHY CALL (WITH A POSSIBLE ADD'L RAISE FROM PLAYER 7,8,9). ALL YOU CAN HOPE FOR IS A PAIR, WITH POSS STRAIGHT WORKING. IT IS NOT WORTH IT, AND ONLY A SUCKER WOULD CALL.

THIS IS ONLY MY OPINION.......................................................HAMMER 101

It isn't a "tight" play, but it wouldn't necessarily be wrong. You would have position, if you hit the flop hard, you could win a large pot, if you don't you could fold and still have decent chips. On the downside, AK, KK, AA all have you crushed. It would heavily depend on the read you have on the opponent. If there is a Q on the flop and your opponent bets large in front of you (more than half the pot), I would worry only about if he would make that kind of raise pre-flop with a pocket pair that would match the other cards on the board, giving him trips. If I thought he would make this play with any top-pair hand, I would call, if it was a weaker bet of half-pot or less, I would tend to raise him, meaning an exact half-pot bet would give me a toss up on both these tactics.

Myself, I would fold. I might consider calling if it were suited. AQ can get you in a lot of trouble, but I'm sure a lot of people would play it. Of course a lot of people will play A2 also lol.

Since you said your table image was tight, aggressive players will pick up on that and attack to pick up the blinds early on in a tourney (because they know/guess that a tight player will think exactly like you: blinds are small (early on) let's wait for premium starting hands/spots).

I don't give advice...just my opinion here, all you can do is watch and remember what each players do, esp. the aggressive ones and act accordingly and/or mix up your play here and there throughout the tourney.

I agree with most of what I've seen, except that I disagree that a big bet preflop is claiming a big hand....that is sometimes true, but more I find it means they DON'T want to see a flop. Also, was he first to enter the pot? were there limpers before him? did anyone else call him before the action came to you? that changes the shape of things a lot. if he's first in, he could easily be trying to steal. if there are limpers, he may have Ace Face or a small/middle PP and want to push some people out instead of letting them see a cheap flop. You're really only a big dog to AA, KK, QQ, and AK...it sounds like a bigger bet than he needed to make if he really wanted action, so I wouldn't mind a call her to see three more cards and have position on him too. if he bets out and you haven't hit, you can fold.

you made the right move buy folding. with a 5x the bb raise thats really the only option in my book but then again im a moron too.

gl next time
