First I'd like to thank everyone for all the comments, pms and emails wishing me a happy birthday... You are all truly a wonderful community of people.
Flops and I have been together for a long time, and shortly after we got together (like a lot of couples do) we got a cat and a dog. I guess it kinda completes the picture for new couples. Anyway, we decided not to have children at the time and still never have decided to take that step, instead our pets have become like our kids.
Time has passed too quickly.
Our dog which we named Puppy (because she seemed to like being called that) isn't able to walk very well. She has also gone deaf and can barely see. I'm afraid she wont be with us much longer, but she still seems to have good spirit and doesn't appear to us or our vet to be in extreme pain, maybe just some minor discomfort associated with her age.
Today our first pet as a couple passed away. His name was Maumau. He was a Mainecoon cat, but seemed like so much more. He's been very sick for a while now, so I guess it's for the best, but it's still hard to take. I'll miss him.
So... does anyone have a time machine I could use for a little while?

In case I missed it, happy birthday.
Losing pets (substitue children) is so very hard. My wife and I lost our first pet together, also a Mainecoon, or at least partially, a few years back. I am not ashamed to say that I cried for about a day.
Good luck and remember all the good times and funny things Maumau did over his lifetime.
A couple of years later we did acquire another kitten, which is now an old guy. Getting Busby brought us so much laughter and joy. However, we still compare him to Dahli. She is a hard act to follow.
Sorry to hear Capt.... I lost my dog two weeks ago...
still find myself looking to see where she is... and breaking down every once in a while...
Best Wishes & Luck

The Coon Cat
One of the oldest natural breeds in North America, the Maine Coon is generally regarded as a native of the state of Maine (the Maine Coon is the official Maine State Cat). A native American longhaired cat the Maine Coon was recognized as a specific breed in Maine where they were held in high regard for their mousing talents. Through nature's own breeding program, this breed has developed into a sturdy cat ideally suited to the harsh winters and varied seasons of the region.
A number of legends surround its origin. A wide-spread, though biologically impossible belief is that it originated from matings between semi-wild, domestic cats and raccoons. This myth, bolstered by the bushy tail and the most common colouring (a raccoon-like brown tabby) led to the adoption of the name Maine Coon. Originally, only brown tabbies were called Maine Coon Cats; cats of other colours were referred to as Maine Shags.

First recorded in cat literature in 1861 with a mention of a black and white cat named "Captain Jenks of the Horse Marines". Maine Coons were popular competitors at early cat shows in Boston and New York. A brown tabby female named "Cosie" won Best Cat at the 1895 Madison Square Garden Show.
