Do YOU want help?

Sep 4, 2008 3:59 pm Report Abuse

Often times we all talk about how we'd like to improve this area or that area in our poker game, yet finding the help and information isn't always possible or there's not a lot of it out there for us. We all know that each and every one of us have our own style of play, our own method and logic to our madness, but we're all here to learn, better ourselves, and to help others. So, I would like to pose the following to each and every one of you:

What areas of your game(s) do you want to improve the most, and why?

Let's get open this blog for topics so that we, as a community, can help each other out and discuss what we all are interested in.

After this is up about a week, I will post some of those topics that people need help with, starting with the most popular ones. Then each week I'll post a blog on one of those topics to encourage everyone to talk about that specific topic.

So, put your thinking caps on and let's get this started!

I'll even start it off....

I would like help with my late game.

Often times I find myself not wanting to be too risky when it comes to a certain point, which in the long run hurts.

How to get over the hump at the Bubble!!!!

Many times I find myself with a smaller than average stack as the bubble approaches. A lot of people say 'tighten up and play only premium hands'. OK.....but what do I do when those premium hands don't materialize? Other people say 'loosen up and get aggressive'. Sure......but you still need cards, don't you?

This is the area where I want to improve my game.

What do I need help with? Well that's easy it's middle tournament play mentally.

I've read all the articles on it yet every time I tighten up and just don't make the plays I should. Such a horrible habit.

I have difficulty playing the big field tournaments, like the RB freerolls for example. It is the crazies that throw me off my game. I understand position and the value of stealing blinds, but I find it difficult when there are huge stacks at the table playing very loose and aggressive. Often they are suck out specialists that seem to steal my chips and donk them away to everyone else at the table. Countless times I have pushed with the best of it, only to get donked by really slim outs on the turn or river. I'm talking naked gutshots and runner runner flush draws that were called without consideration to odds.

Bingo poker kills me!

Bubble play at micro and low level sit and go's or MTT's.

How to put an opponent on a hand. Figuring out their range, etc.

Stud and razz games! I like em, i'm good at em, but i hardly know anything about the math of the game, or when to bet or fold (besides what i learned myself) I'm really interested how my level of play differs from the pro's level of play!

oh man, where to start? I've really improved my HU game lately...I think it's mostly on picking my spots to make stands, challenge raisers/reraisers, and get away from hands I think are good....I blogged recently about 2 hands in similar spots, where I held an overpair to the flop, had raised preflop, and in one hand got called down by top pair on the flop to win, the other got called down by a higher PP than mine and lost....and how was I to know the difference?
xjd66x Sep 4, 2008 4:59 pm
you know....i would love to open up and ask for help to improve my game, as a matter of fact i did once and the only response i got from people was...you should read this book or you should read that book it will explain everything to you. well i dont blog as much anymore for the reason that all i will be told is to "READ". if this community is all about "you should read" just to get your blogs in and not about talking to someone and actually suggesting look here is what i do in that situation well...then maybe this community is not for me. on anther note...please do not type back and say easy dont be so aggresive or maybe you should"read" or maybe this community is not for you..i will make that decision...god bless and good luck on and off the felts.

Oh My reading over the above..........I think I need it all.

Ty Gini this is a great idea. I know there are many blogs on these and they are great but refreshers are so good too! Thanks

muddawgg Sep 4, 2008 5:10 pm
heads up, i hardly make it that far in tournies to have experience
PapaPower Sep 4, 2008 5:22 pm

xjd66x,

I agree with you. I went out and bought the books and I can skim through them from time to time, but I can't read them cover to cover like some people (who seem to be able to quote a chapter for every situation and yet I never see them cash in any tournaments). It's too dry and boring for my taste and I fall asleep.

I want to be able to post something like this:

I have J-7 suited in the small blind at a single table sit n go with 5 players left and I sit 3rd in chips. The short stack is BB and the chip leader limped UTG. What is my bet play? And why?

And I don't want someone to tell me to go read Mike the Mouth's new book 'DONK PLAY'.

That's the reason for Gini's blog here. To gather topics of interest and discuss them in later blogs. Great idea, Gini. And I hope we get enough topics to interest everyone.

StudioCat Sep 4, 2008 5:24 pm
Someone already mentioned this but for me it is also middle tournament play. When to open up on range of starting hands always keeps me in a constant state of confusion. If i play too tight, I end up folding the best hand; if too loose, it's busto.

Also, interested in discussions on Omaha hi/lo.
astrogini Sep 4, 2008 5:24 pm
Exactly Papa!

I can read blog after blog after blog, but to read someone's book just drives me insane.

I too hope that we can get enough topics to discuss and that everyone gets involved. WE together can help each other out, after all.. that's what friends are for!
Sandman2369 Sep 4, 2008 5:38 pm

Great blog Gini. I will be more than happy to provide assistance to anyone interested. While I have limited experience and primarily play $5 SNGs, I have had pretty consistent success.

...here is to finishing in the money...Manny aka holdnamonster

BAT357 Sep 4, 2008 5:48 pm

I am, at most times, over aggressive post flop after I take control pre flop (raise, reraise)...walking right into traps...I am not afraid to fold any hand..just don't give myself a chance to do so!!!
