Trips (3 of a kind) vs. the STR8

Aug 28, 2008 11:40 pm Report Abuse

Hello all, I have not been blogging much lately as I have been working on my live game mostly, very little recent online play. Not bad results either! If you don't play live you really, you are really missing the raw bueaty of the game. If you think you can read people online, wait untill you get on that felt!

Anyway, I was on pokerstars in a $10 tourny blinds 25/50 with a stack of about $1699 in the cut off with one limper in front of me and I got 99. Not a moster but a low-medium pair (NOT 33).

I raise to 150 (99)

Button calls 150

SB folds

BB call 150

early limper calls for 100

flop comes 9 A 10 pot (675)

BB checks

Iimper checks

I check

Button bets 100

BB calls 100

Limper calls 100

I raise to 350

Button folds

BB Calls for 250

Limper calls for 250

Pot (1725)

turn J

bb checks

limper bets 350

I call 350

bb folds

pot 2425

River 3 no flush but 9 10 J (strong str8 possibility right!) But I got a set of 9s and about $850 left in my stack.

So, when the Limper goes all in for his last 400 I insta-called!

I had to do it right! Well, was I? Of course I wasn't! He had Q8 and hit the str8. I knew it! No, I mean I absolutly knew that he made the str8 from the turn bet and river all-in, I knew that he hit his hand and knew it was the str8.

Yet, I called! What a donk play. What is the use of reading a situation perfectly only to make the wrong play. None, I tell ya.

You gotta play with your gut right?

Had to let alittle steam off and I hadn't blogged in awhile so I owed it to you and me!

I will keep you posted as to my goal to become "The Best Poker Player on the Planet"

Thanks for reading,

Lucky

That is one of the biggest leaks in my game right now. I can make a correct read, and I call anyway to confirm my suspicions. The only satisfaction I get is knowing that my reading skills are getting better, but my folding skills are getting worse.

I'm the same way. It's like I have this insatiable curiosity for proving that I made the correct read, or something. This usually happens when I have a big pocket pair, and my opponent flops a set with an under pair. Once they call my flop bet, I know I should get away from it, but too many times I end up putting more chips in the pot anyway, just to have my suspicions confirmed. Something to work on...

Glad to know I am not alone. I want to be the best Player not the best Reader!
